May 22 at 7:30 PM in Gorelick Hall at the JCC, when Dr. David Goldfield will present a lecture on the Jewish “place" in Southern life. Dr. Goldfield is the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a world- renowned scholar, author and lec turer on the urban South and southern history. Co-sponsored by the Carolina Agency for Jewish (CAJE) and the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte (JFGC), in addition to Dr. Goldfield’s lecture, there will also be a demonstration at the pro gram of the new interactive DVD- ROM "Heritage: Civilization & the Jews.” WTVI. media sponsor of the event will take part, with an advance promo by the executive producer for their upcoming local ly produced program "The Hometown Stories: The Jews of Charlotte." Building on the momentum of last May's program at the Charlotte Museum of History about the history of the Jewish community in Charlotte, this event promises to delve even more deeply into understanding the experience of being both Jewish and Southern, and the ambiguities that sometimes result. Dr. David Goldfield is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte since 1982. His latest book, just published in March 2002, is Still Fighting the Civil War: The American South and Southern History (Louisiana State University Press). Uptowner Chairs, Linda Seigel and Linda Joy Weinstein t f ■ Dr. David Goldfield Fields and Skyscrapers: Southern City and Region. 1607-1980 (Louisiana State University Press, 1982) and Black, White, and Southern: Race Relations and Southern Culture, 1940 to the Present (Louisiana State University Press, 1990) that received the Mayflower Award for Non-Fiction. The latter work was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in History and received the 1991 Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights Outstanding Book Award. In addi tion to writing. Goldfield consults for history museums and the media on issues related to urban and economic development in the twentieth-century South, and has worked for the U.S. Department of Justice and the North Carolina Department of Justice on voting rights cases. He is a founding board member of the Levine Museum of the New South and a consultant to the Museum. Goldfield is also editor of the Journal of Urban History and a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Southern History and the North Carolina Historical Review. Emily Zimmern, -Executive Director of the Levine Museum of the New South will introduce Dr. Goldfield on May 22. Toddlers to seniors walked through and around Shalom Park on Sunday, April 21 as hundreds of members of Charlotte’s Jewish community participated in a walk and rally to express solidarity with Israel. The nearly 300 participants walked a mile-and-a-half loop around Shalom Park, including a leg on Providence Road between Temple Israel and Temple Beth El. Israel Consul General Jacob Rosen began the walk citing the strong American and Israel rela tionship and the battle Israel faces on the ground and in Europe. Standing in the heat with the community at the Camp Mindy flagpole, the Consul General thanked the community for their support for the people of Israel. He added that with much of the world against Israel, this show of support was important for him and his country. The afternoon of festivities included groundbreaking for the $25 million expansion of Shalom Park, dedication of Ostrow Family athletic fields, and a variety of activities. Rabbis Jim Bennett and Yossi Groner participated in the formal remarks. Congregations and orga nizations manned activity centers where kids and adults alike were able to play Mah Johngg, make an Nearly 300 individuals braved the brutal heat to show their support for Israel. The Federation’s booth sold Israeli t-shirts donated by Eric Lerner, with the proceeds going to the North American Jewry’s multi-million dollar Israel Emergency Campaign. “United We Stand” t-shirts are still avail able for $10 each. Call 704-944- 6760. O Or Gi?EArER Charlotte Young Israelis Visit Charlotte they did have in common, though, was their desire to inform us of what their lives were like in Israel. What it meant to Alexandra to be a recent immigrant; for Elias, how his life has changed since the resuce; and for D'ganit, what the Jewish Agency for Israel has done for these two young people and what it can do for others. They spoke to the congrega tions at Temple Beth El, Temple Israel, and Congregation Ohr HaTorah. They met with teens in BBYO. They charmed and capti vated all those who heard their unique stories. But the most unique story unfolded that very weekend. At Shabbat dinner at the home of Roz and Ivan Cooper, Elias and Micah, Roz’s and Ivan’s son, eyed one D 'ganit Herzig and Ale.xandra Veit Clearly, they had little in com mon with one another. Alexandra, born in the Ukraine, with only par tial Jewish background, an immi grant, and a teenager; Elias, an Ethiopian who walked 40 days to a rescue and airlift to Israel when he was just a child; and D’ganit, a Sabra, a kibbutznik and a Masters in Public Administration.
