In addition to Gene, mem bers of the ensemble are violinist Ali Kavadlo, guitarist Mike Mosley, and bassist Ron Brendle, all Charlotte Symphony musicians and prominent jazz artists in our region. The ensemble has between 40-50 its own arrangements of standard Klezmer tunes, as well as other '■‘Klezmerized" versions of mtisic ranging from Gershwin to Mahler. Viva Klezmer! has appeared in concert on several occasions with the Charlotte Symphony, as well as numerous appearances at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC. This exciting ensemble is espe cially proud of its woork with young people. For th past 12 years. Viva Klezmer! has present ed a scries of educational Klezmer concerts in the Charlotte public schools, perhaps the only school system in the country to bring Klezmer music to its students on a regular basis. The program teach es lessons in tolerance and an appreciation for cultural diversity, and has met with critical success from both educators and students. Additionally, Viva Klezmer! has made four recordings, and was recently invited to perform a con cert for ClarinetFest 2000, an international symposium held at the University of.Oklahoma, and sponsored by the International Clarinet Association. WDAV awarded the the ensemble its First Annual Spencer Artist Award for its “dedicated work to enhance the community of the arts” in Charlotte. 0
