Meet the Charlotte Jewish Women of Strength
So many people have asked for
more information on the women
who were chosen as Charlotte
Jewish Women of Strength that
the CJN has run profiles of three
women each month for the last six
months. This project was devel
oped and photographed by Andrea
Mellen for the Jewish Community
Center’s Cultural Arts Festival,
and was sponsored by Gentry
Mills, Resources for Senior
Living, and Metropolitan Bakery.
The exhibit is located at the
Jewish Community Center, on the
brick wall opposite the board-
room.
Marcia Stern
Marcia Stem has been active
both in the Jewish community and
outside of it. After being diag
nosed with leukemia and receiv
ing a bone marrow transplant.

Lymphoma Society, acting as a
First Connection volunteer which
involves making contact with
patients and families going
through the process of dealing
with these diseases. She has
chaired the Red Cross Bone
Marrow Recruitment board, and is
a spokesperson for the Red Cross
by speaking to area non-proftts
and churches on bone marrow
recruitment.
Within the Jewish community,
Marsha is the inncoming co-
President of Temple Israel
Sisterhood, and involved with
community service with Temple
Israel. She is the chairperson of
Camp Soar {Special Olympics
Athletic Retreat) and one of the
three co-chairs for the Special
Needs committee at the Jewish
Community Center. Marcia also
served on the planning committee
for the domestic abuse awareness
program put on by Temple Israel,
Temple Beth El, Federation and
Jewish Family Services. When she
is not involved in any of the
above, she is active in fundraising
for her daughter’s marching band.
Ruthie Warshenhrot
The youngest recipient of the
Women of Strength award, Ruthie
Warshenbrot Just finished her
freshman year at UNC Chapel
Hill, where she is currently on the
Ruthie Warshenbrot
board of Hillel. When Ruthie was
selected as a Woman of Strength,
she was a senior in high school,
and very active in Chai Chaverim
B’nai Brith Girls. She held posi
tions of Judaism and Vice
President, and served as the
Members in Training Big Sister.
Barbara Ziegler
Since 1991, Barbara Ziegler
has been the Executive Director of
Barbara Ziegler
Teen Health Connection,
which provides affordable,
accessible physical and
mental health services to
individuals ages 11-21,
emphasizing a family-cen
tered approach. Before
that, Barbara founded and
became the Executive
Director of The
Mecklenburg Council on
Adolescent Pregnancy in
Charlotte.
Some of her community
involvement includes:

Joyce Rebecca Dubin is a June
graduate of Myers Park High
School where she was a student in
the International Baccalaureate
program. She will attend the
University of Maryland at College
Park where she plans to study psy
chology. Joyce is the daughter of
Dan and Ellen Dubin.
Adina Hana Dubin graduated
with Distinction from the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. A member of Phi
Beta Kappa, she majored in both
communications and anthropolo
gy and will pursue a career in
Jewish communal service. She
will continue her education a New
York University where she plans
to ear two masters degrees: a
Master of Public Administration
from the Robert F. Wagner School
of Public Service and a Masters of
Jewish Studies from the Skirball
Department of Hebrew and Judaic
Studies. Adina is the daughter of
Dan and Ellen Dubin.
Lia Beresford will be graduat
ing from Northwest School of the
Arts, and will attend UNC-
Wilmington as a history major in

Ethan Biber is graduating
from massage therapy school in
Asheville, NC and plans to work
as a massage therapist either in
Asheville or Washington, DC.

Melissa and her husband
Jeremy Cominole gave birth to
Miranda Grace Cominole, the
first grandchild of Dan and Judy
Biber, on April 28 in Raleigh. O
