The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2005 - Page 11 Camp Barney Medintz Sets Open House in Charlotte Camp Barney Medintz, sum mer resident camp of the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta, will present an exciting new musical slide production and dessert reception in Charlotte on Thursday, November 17, at the Levine JCC in Charlotte, begin ning at 7:00 PM. Jim Mittenthal, Camp Director, will meet with new and returning families, answer questions pertaining to the 2006 summer camp season, and provide applications for registra tion. Camp Barney Medintz is locat ed in the North Georgia Blue Ridge mountains on over 500 wooded acres surrounding two lakes just 75 miles NE of Atlanta. According to Mr. Mittenthal, the setting facilitates “every imagina ble activity,” including water ski ing, hydro-tubing, wake boarding, swimming, sailing, canoeing, the “Iceberg,” the “Log Roll,” leaping off the “Blob” or soaring down the 180-foot slides, horseback riding, campouts, “zipping” nearly 800 feet across Lake Wendy, whitewa- ter rafting, tennis, all land/court sports, theater, crafts, music, Israeli culture, dance, radio, news paper, mountain biking, climbing the adjacent Appalachian Trail and a series of high-adventure rock climbing, rappelling and ropes courses. Specific age groups may also enjoy fencing, karate, ceramics or scuba diving. Camp Barney, celebrating its 44th summer season, has created “a unique community that is all about adventure and self discov ery, exhilarating activities and exciting events, being in a strong culturally Jewish environment with special friends, all under the supervision of a carefully selected group of mature, talented, consci entious, loving, and enthusiastic staff,” said Mr. Mittenthal. Camp Barney annually devel ops new construction projects to improve its spectacular mountain facility. After recently completing a major cultural and performing “Lasting Impressions: Jewish Life in a Small Southern Town” Against the backdrop of Robeson County’s main street, river, plantation homes, festivals, fields, high schools, libraries, and church, filmmakers CBS news correspondent Drew Levinson and university professor Melinda Weinstein reflect on growing up as a Jewish minority in the Bible Belt. Through interviews with Robeson County’s tri-racial citi zenry, the filmmakers explore how Jewish families in the area struggle to fit in yet still stood out.
