Conferences
Educators throughout our
Jewish education system attended
workshop and conferences this
summer. Four members attended
the CAJE (Coalition for the
Advancement of Jewish
Education) conference in Seattle
at the University of Washington
campus, one attended CAJE in
NY at Hofstra University campus
and at other venues throughout the
US, our dedicated educators spent
at least part of the summer work
ing hard and learning.
Here are some of the comments
of thanks to the community and
especially the Blumenthal
Foundation for their generous sup
port of our educators.
From Roz Cooper (Principal
of Consolidated High School of
Jewish Education and
Educational Leader in Tikvah
Charlotte): “Tikvah Charlotte is a
new program designed to give
special needs students’ access to
their Jewish Heritage in an appro
priate educational setting.... Since
the program is new to our commu
nity, the ability to meet other peo
ple engaged in Jewish Special
Education made this conference a
really important one for me. I have
subsequently joined a network of
others who run similar programs.”
From Dalia Widis (3rd and 6th
grade teacher from Temple Beth
El Religious School) '. “This sum
mer I attended a one-week teacher
workshop conducted by the
Institute of Modem Israel (ISMI)
in Boston on Modem Israel. Many
topics were covered at the work
shop including Arab-Israeli
Conflicts, Israeli society and liter
ature, the modem rebirth of
Zionism and much more. Classes
were nonstop from morning until
late night ... the teachers were top
notch ... there were over 70 teach
ers in attendance representing 21
states and Canada. Thanks to this
workshop, I have many new mate
rials and resources to share with
my Students and fellow teachers.”
From Robin Landsman: (dedi
cated teacher from CHS and Tl
Religious School): “CAJE offers
Jewish educators the opportunity
to enhance their craft, network
and share common concerns and
experiences. Attending the confer
ence helps to keep our programs
up to date and to ensure that the
Jewish students in Charlotte are
receiving the best education avail
able. In addition, we are given the
chance to review new texts and
materials that help to keep our
programs relevant and vital to
young people.”
From Sue Klein (teacher from
Consolidated High School and
program director of the JLRC) :
“In education, there is a huge fund
of information available and the
ability to communicate and share
resources helps you become a bet
ter educator. Sometimes, it is
important to brainstorm with fel
low professionals in order think
outside the box and at other times,
it is just as important to learn from
others mistakes and mishaps. I
learned a great deal from the
classes I took and joined various
professional networks to further
my involvement.” ^
