I The Charlotte Jewish News -January 2007 - Page 17 Laptop Learning; Anytime, Anywhere Levin Jewish Middle School Takes a Turn Towards Technology By Jessica Sammis The year that I became a stu dent at Wake Forest University, a new program had been estab lished. My class was the first class to receive laptops as a part of their education. I remember thinking that this was a wonderful opportu nity for learning that would cer tainly take off at universities around the country. But I was wrong. The laptop craze has taken off, but in a direction 1 hadn’t expected at the time. Laptop learn ing is now becoming prevalent in middle and high schools as well. The Barbara and Jerry Levin Jewish Middle School has made the decision to join the trend and will begin its very own laptop learning program for the upcom ing school year. This plan has been two years in the making for us, but the research on laptop learning has been going on much longer. Several schools, both pub lic and private, have made the turn towards this type of technology based learning. Our school has had access to a lot of wonderful technology since Yoni Raffler works on a social stud ies project that utilizes several dif ferent technology skills for word processing, organization, and pres entation. 6uf beginnings in 2002; however, 'vmtil now, our resources have been limited. Therefore, our students Have had to share the computers because there , haven’t been einough to go around. Beginning in the fall of 2007, each and every student at the Levin Jewish Middle School will have his/her own laptop. The computers will Eighth grade student Bashia Oudmayer loves working on the computer to showcase her subject area knowledge and creativity. become the center of the class room around which learning is based. I recently visited one Jewish middle school in Miami, FL, the Greenfield Hebrew Academy, where they have been learning with laptops for the past eight years. Principal Sue Einhom explains, “The use of the laptop as an educational and organizational tool has opened up an extraordi nary new world of exploration for our middle school students. It enables the educator to become a facilitator of guided learning. Students are eagerly engaged and take on more responsibility for their learning.” We are very excited to be adjoining our school with this type of learning. If you have any questions about The Barbara and Jerry Levin Jewish Middle School or laptop learning, please contact Jessica Sammis at 704-366-4885 orjsammis@cjdschool.org. Brianna Shporer and Rachael Hall work together on one lap top. The learning opportunities for our students will triple once every student has access to his/her computer.
