The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2007 - Page 7 Levine Museum of the New South Unveils New Families of Abraham Exhibition Levine Museum Nearly half of humanity — Jews, Christians, and Muslims — claim the same spiritual ancestor, Abraham. The Levine Museum of the New South invites visitors to explore what these faiths have in common through Families of Abraham, an exciting new photo graphic narrative exhibit. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are sometimes referred to as the “Abrahamic reli gions,” because of the role Abraham plays in their holy books and beliefs. Today, three billion people — half the world’s population — call him father, patriarch, spiritual ancestor. And while modem Judaism, Christianity and Islam share Abraham’s faith in one God and many ethical teach ings, each religion each speaks in its own distinctive voice. This new exhibit explores these similarities as well as the distinc tive voices found across the three faiths. Led by project director and curator Eleanor Brawley, a team of eight local photographers fol lowed eleven different Jewish, Christian and Muslim families from the Charlotte area for a year, documenting daily life and faith practices. They captured Holy Days across the three religions, as well as family milestones and moments from the families’ every day lives. The families portrayed in the exhibit include: Tammy Seigel and Adam Bernstein, and children Asher (13) and Shayna (15) Karen Garfein and daughter Hannah (7) Rose and Imad Hamid, and children Suzanne (18), Omar (16), and Samir(13) of the New South Asra and Masood Khan, and children Safoorah (23), Kamran Hussain (her husband, 29), Basheer Khatoon (grandmother), Mohammad (student at UNC- Chapel Hill), Sofia, Tamanna, Bilal (17), Zakiyyah with baby Raahil, Abdul Basith Anika and Rahman Khan, and children Tiwana (niece, 17), Hassan (3) Stephanie Lee and daughter Sarah Nicole Katie and Chris Patterson, and children Owen (8), Hannah (7), Gavin (5), Jonathan (4), Corban (2), Leigha(l) Connell and Dank Pinckney, and children Eleanor (9), Amanda (5), Thomas (4) Remzija and Mirsad Suljakovic, and children Nisveta (9), Ismet (12) Toni and Lemuel Turner, and children Alexis (12), Bailey (9) Debra and David Van Glish, and children Jordan (7), Ethan (5), Shayna (2) According to Brawley, “In this exhibit, the viewer will get to know each family through photographs and their words - they will see a young Jewish boy becoming a man in the eyes of the congregation as he completes his Bar Mitzvah, and a Catholic Nicaraguan mother holding her first child moments after the birth. We hope through the experience of looking at areas we share - from the celebration of new life to the end of life - view ers will grow in their knowledge and understanding of our com monality.” The documentary photogra phers included: Byron Baldwin, Donna Bise, Eleanor Brawley, John Daughtry, Donna Foster, Chris Keane, Tina Manley, and Nancy Pierce. In addition to the photography team, Linda De Castrique, Linda Newcome, and Judy Simpson Cook spent many hours with each family conducting interviews. In conjunction with the exhibit, Levine Museum has partnered with Mecklenburg Ministries to offer tours and facilitated dialogue opportunities for groups. Designed to expand understanding and explore connections, groups will enjoy the exhibit, individual reflection and group discussion. Call us at 704-333-1887 ext. 501 for more info on the dialogues or to book a group visit (self-guided and guided tours also available). In addition to the exhibit and the dialogues, the Museum will be offering a variety of related pro gramming during the five month exhibit run. On January 13, the Museum will host a special Community Day to celebrate the exhibit. Featuring free admission all day, plus food, music and activities from each of the three faiths. 4* WORK WITH A LEADER IN CHARLOTTE REAL ESTATE w/m: Executive Realty 704-926-2544 office 704-975-8500 cell WWW.
