The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2007 - Page 9 Youth Visions Hebrew High-lights At Hebrew High we try to fos ter a close relationship between our students and the state of Israel. In order to ensure that our students are well informed and comfortable discussing the current situation in Israel, all of our elective courses during the first session this year focused on Israel. One brand new class entitled “Honest Reporting” investigated the media’s coverage of current events in the Middle East. Amy Krakovitz Montoni, editor of the Charlotte Jewish News, shared her expertise with the group as they tried to navigate the reports that came from the region. This is just one way that Hebrew High strives to create a strong bond between the Jewish community in Charlotte and our brothers and sisters in the State of Israel. This is a banner year at Hebrew High. Our enrollment is higher than ever (225 and still growing), our teachers have created exciting new curricula and our PTO has a brand new president. The first trimester was filled with fun and great learning experiences. We’ve added new classes and new teach ers so that students of all back grounds and all interests will find something special to relate to. Hebrew High has definitely become the place to be for Jewish teens on Wednesday night. The second session is off to a great start as well. The theme for this round of electives is “Jewish Arts and Culture.” We have a class that studies the Holocaust through film, another that teaches Hebrew through rock and roll lyrics and still another that finds Torah lessons in the vintage TV show, The Twilight Zone. A perennial favorite, Jewish Cooking, teaches our ninth graders the laws of Kashrut, the symbolism and sig nificance of some of our favorite delicacies and lets them actually cook delicious, traditional special ties. It’s hard to believe that the Everyone has fun at Hebrew High. &■ f Leaders from BBYO - the world’s leading pluralistic Jewish teen movement ~ gathered in Washington, DC at the High School Israel Summit, presented more than 10,000 petition signatures to White House Jewish Community Liaison Jay Zeidman. Teens organized petition-signing events in their local communities and raised awareness through one-on- one engagement during the ten-month initiative.
