The Charlotte Chapter of
Hadassah is presenting an
extremely important program that
no one in the Jewish Community
should miss.
At 7:30 PM on Wednesday,

Sandra Alfonsi, Chair of the

Curriculum Watch will discuss the
need for us to pay close attention
to the teaching materials used in
our schools that present slanted,
biased, and/or inaccurate informa
tion on Judaism, the Holocaust,
and Israel.
She will also discuss the grow
ing coverage of Islam in our text
books and how important it is to
see if its presentation is sanitized,
stylized or in violation of the sep
aration of church and state in what
it says or recommends as activi
ties.
Dr. Alfonsi is an outstanding
speaker who will explain what we
can do on a grass roots level, to
make sure that what children are
being taught in our schools is his
torically, ethnically and culturally
unbiased.

Federation Spring Lecture with Susan Isaacs
(Continued from page 3)
doesn’t advise new writers to
share their work in writing cours
es. “You’re exposing yourself to
too much danger,” she says. “If
you’re an original voice, you run
the risk of being pushed into
something else, or losing it.”
Isaacs herself learned to write
from a book (John Braine’s 1974
How to Write a Novel).
She is a strong supporter of the
writing community. She’s chair of
the board of directors of Poets &
Writers and communes with fel
low writers through that organiza
tion as well as with a group of
writers that includes notables like
Mary and Carol Higgins Clark,
Harlan Cohen and Linda Fairstein.
They meet for lunch monthly. It is
a free-for-all through the salad
course, when the talk turns profes
sional and they share advice about
writing problems and discuss their
agents, editors and the business.
Isaacs will bring her wit and
knowledge about women’s litera
ture to the Jewish Federation’s 9th
Annual Spring Lecture on
Thursday, April 12 at Temple
Israel. Tickets for the event are
$36 for dinner, lecture and dessert
reception, or $18 for lecture and
dessert only. Individual sponsor
ships are also available at $1500
per table and include dinner, lec
ture, dessert, signed books and
reserved seating for ten. A $50
minimum gift to the 2007 Annual
Campaign is required in order to
attend the event. Susan Isaac’s
11th novel Past Perfect is now for
sale in the Federation office for
$25. The money raised by our
Annual Campaign enables the
Jewish Federation of Greater
Charlotte to make a difference
everyday in the lives of millions
of people in Charlotte, in Israel
and in sixty countries around the
world. For tickets or more infor
mation, contact Sue Littauer in the
Federation office at 704-944-6758
