In the retelling year after year, the story continues to resound with the history and the heritage of a people who never took free dom for granted. It is a story of a people who learned that freedom is earned; it is not an enti tlement. As American Jews, we enjoy the widest range of freedoms and thus are offered opportunities to act on behalf of ourselves and our community to insure, support and enrich those freedoms —opportu nities that are both an obligation as well as a challenge for action. Hadassah members have, for 95 years, accepted both this responsi bility and this challenge. We act to change the landscape of Israel with education, healing and the promise of a better life. In the United States, we grow leaders and ensure the vitality of Jewish life for women and families. We educate ourselves and our families to ensure a strong and vibrant Jewish peoplehood. We act to make our voices heard so all citizens have the free dom to live without fear and enjoy and respect the rights for individual and cultural autonomy. In the retelling of the story of Passover, our past joins our present. Freedom does not come without effort. For us in Hadassah we know that what we give in time and effort is, in fact, our reward. We gdin in knowing that we have made a difference for others; we gain in personal com petence, knoVledge and individ ual skills; we gain in camaraderie and life long friendships. As Hadassah activists, we teach oth ers and thus, we become empow ered citizens. We wish that your Passover holiday is shared in the warmth and peace of family and friends and that the freedom we all share, will one day be enjoyed by all the citizens of the world.
