The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2007- Page 2 i i From the Editor This June will mark nine full years that I have served as edi tor of The Charlotte Jewish News. From my seat in front of this computer screen, I have witnessed astonishing growth and maturity in this small com munity. Two large education wings for children from pre school through high school; a summer campsite of independ ent buildings for activities beyond imagination; a second swimming pool with slides and a splash area; expanded syna gogues and additional religious choices in worship and educa tion - all this in less than ten years. The Charlotte Jewish News has always tried to keep up with this amazing growth. Our mis sion is to be the voice of this community and as it increases in size, both the number of agencies as well as the popula tion, so must this newspaper. But with expanded responsibil ities comes higher costs. And so we find ourselves needing to come to you, our loyal readers for help. On the bottom of this page is our voluntary subscription form. Please look this over and consider making a donation to The Charlotte Jewish News. A return envelope has been insert ed into the paper this month for your convenience. Please remember that there are some agencies in the Jewish community that cannot commu nicate with you without The Charlotte Jewish News. Please help us maintain the high stan dards of reporting and breadth of communication that you have come to expect from CJN by sending your tax-deductible donation today. Todah rabah. JEWISH FEDERATION NEWS The Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte raises and distributes funds to support and to enrich the lives ofJews locally, nationally, in Israel and worldwide. Through education, planning, and community building the Federation s mission ensures that Jewish values, goals, traditions, and connections are preserved for current and future generations Jewish Federation Annual Meeting and Community Yom Ha’Atzmaut Concert Features Israeli Perfomer Shuly Nathan Tuesday, April 24 at 7:30 PM* in Gorelick Hall at the Levine Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation will hold its Annual Meeting fol lowed by a special com munity concert to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day). The annual meeting, chaired by Linda Seigel, will include the election of new offi cers and board members for the Jewish Federation. The event is free and open to the public. The Community Yom Ha’atzmaut concert will feature Israeli Performer Shuly Nathan. Bom in London and raised in Israel, Shuly Nathan made histo ry with the song “Jemsalem of Gold.” At the age of 16, she began playing the guitar, singing and collecting folk songs. Songwriter and composer Naomi Shemer heard her performing, and asked Shuly Nathan to sing a song she had written. The year Shuly Nathan was 1967; the song was “Jerusalem of Gold.” Two weeks later the 1967 war broke out and the song became the anthem of the war, a prayer for the reunifi cation of Jemsalem. This year along with the celebration of Israel’s 59th Independence Day we are commemorating the 40th anniversary of this memorable song. Shuly and her guitar have traveled the world, bringing the songs of Israel to audiences everywhere. A gentle, compas sionate storyteller, she weaves a narrative that combines Jewish folklore and legends, personal history, and the stories of the songs she sings. As part of our Yom Ha’atzmaut events this year, the Federation will be hosting an exhibition celebrating the vision ary of the Jewish state, Theodor Herzl. The exhibit “Herzl: Up Close and Personal” consists of 28 panels of stimulating visuals and texts that will be displayed on Main Street at Shalom Park beginning April 11 and ending April 30. Through photographs, illustra tion, graphics and text, the exhi- 'bition will bridge present and past, imbuing a new generation with an understanding of the Zionist vision, the context in which it emerged, and its rele vance today.
