College Street), Dan Fleishman, head of Wachovia Sponsorships and Aliances will give a presentation on the Wachovia Championship and what’s involved in bringing the PGA Tour to Charlotte. Did you know the fifth annual Championship tees off on April 30 and a portion of the proceeds will support Teach for America? Join us to learn more*. Then, on May 16, the day before the opening of the “Rhythm and Moves” produc tion, Uptowners participants will meet with NC Dance Theatre’s Executive Director Doug Singleton backstage at the Belk Theatre (enter on ' College between 3rd and Trade). If you’ve ever won dered what goes on behind the scenes to put on one of the Queen City’s most exciting cul tural olfferings, this program is not to be missed. Join us to eat lunch in close proximity to the dance rehearsals and costume shop. “Through these exciting pro grams, anyone who works Uptown or can get Uptown dur ing lunch can connect with the Federation and the Jewish com munity,” says Uptowners Committee Member Justin Cohen. Reservations and food orders for the Uptowners Wachovia Championship lunch are due by Thursday,- April 12, and for the NC Dance Theatre lunch by Monday, May 14. (Boxed lunches are from Reid’s Fine Foods and the choices are tuna, egg salad, vegetable sandwich, Mideastem wrap or Greek salad.) Featured Uptowners speak ers since September have included: Alan Gordon, - Chairman of Mayor Pat McCrory’s Immigration Study Commission, on Immigration to Charlotte; Moira Quinn, Senior VP of Commynications and Chief Operation Officer at Charlotte Center City Partners, on Center City Rejuvenation; Laura Everett, Director of Education and Programs at the Levine Museum of the New South, with a pre-opening peek at the “Families of Abraham” exhibit; Leonard Feld, Chief Medical Officer of the Levine Children’s Hospital and Chairman of Pediatrics for Caroiinas Medical Center, on the new Levine Children’s Hospital; and Jennifer Kraft, Director of Community Relations for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC, a Federation agency), about vulnerable Jewish populations. Uptowners: Nosh and Network is the Federation’s outreach initiative for the Charlotte business and profes sional community. All Uptowners events run from 12 noon to 1 PM and the format consists of networking and lunch, a brief presentation and Q&A. Lunch is available for purchase at $10; advance regis tration required. Uptowners is free if no lunch is purchased. After temporarily Hasidic Fiddler losing use of his legs, he spent three years in hospitals and reha bilitation facilities. During that time, as part of his rehabilitation, Assour began to use his hands to sculpt, and found he had real tal ent. After his recuperation, Assour aspired to help fellow Israeli artists who were suffering due to the decline in tourism. In 1985, he received government support to take the works of other Israeli artists to foreign countries to promote a positive image of his homeland. Assour, curator of the Expressions: Israeli Art Show and Sale, the largest collection of original Israeli art in this country, will bring his collection to the Sam Lemer Center for Tammy Seigel, Adam Bernstein, and Donna Foster at an Uptowners event. Newcomer Schmooze Sunday, April 29 10 AM, Weinberg Center at the Levine JCC. New city, new friends, new way of life. Join us to learn about the Charlotte Jewish com munity while meeting new friends. At 11:30 AM, new comers will be treated to a private tour of Expressions: Israeli Art Show and Sale. Art lovers will find paintings by such notable artists as Agam, Ebgi and Caiman Shemi; sculp tures by Baruch Saktsier, and Ruth Bloch; brass sculptures by Assour; jewelry by Miriam Hirskowitz, who designed gold and silver creations for Princess Diana; soft art by Caiman Shemi and much more. In addition, there will be artwork suitable to decorate a child’s room as well as Chanukah menorahs, Sabbath candlesticks, Mezzuzot and other Judaica items.
