The Charlotte Jewish News -May 2007 - Page 18 This Is Not Your Parents’ Art Class Women’s News Everyone over the age of 40 remembers art class as a futile exercise in trying to copy the object that the art teacher posed at the front of the classroom. This activity usually happened at the same desk where all other classroom studies took place. For many people this was the beginning and the end of any artistic endeavors for the rest of their lives. Enter Mrs. Donna Lemer in her art room at Charlotte Jewish Day School. Students from kinder garten through fifth grade are learning art history from cave painting to cubism; art of Mexico, Africa, Egypt, and other countries and cultures; and regional art of the United States. CJDS students create art in the style of the masters. The children are experimenting with color, line, shape, and tex ture. They have put the face of a modem girl on the Mona Lisa. They have depicted Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Aaron, Joseph, Moses, and David, who are tradi Gleiberman's tionally the guests who visit the sukkah. They can identify the styles of Paul Klee, El Greco, Marc Chagall, Renoir, Jackson Pollack, Frank Stella, Hokusai, Leonardo da Vinci, Norman Rockwell, and many others. It is virtually impossible to convey the range of sub jects that Mrs. Lemer cov ers in her amazing self- designed art curriculum. She has an uncanny ability to integrate science, social studies, history, and Jewish studies into creative art activities that everyone can enjoy. 4* With Appreciation Hadassah Kinneret Circle at the Lake The Hadassah Kinneret Circle at the Lake is having “End Of Year” meeting and installation of officers for year 2006 - 2007 on June 12, 7 PM at Mia Familia in Cornelius. By Heidi Rotberg, President, Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah The future belongs to those with the vision to shape it. And our future is as bright as ever as we conclude a year filled with memorable successes. As each individual member makes a dif ference, so the combined power and influence of many is equally impressive. And it all happened because of your generosity, your indomitable spirit and your deter mination to reach our goals. Hadassah women in our own community, and in cities across the nation, continue in their com mitment to work toward improv ing the lives of those who need our help. We can be proud of our accomplishments. We’ve pub lished our 60th annual Hadassah directory; the Film Festival has expanded to over one week; and our programs attract more and more participants each event. Here in our community, our Hadassah volunteers have fos tered and expanded membership through community initiatives such as collecting for the food pantry, tutoring, reading to chil dren, and Operation Linus blan ket-knitting. We have helped to educate and engage our members and the larger community with a wide variety of offerings, such as DAS SAH the monthly Lunch ‘n’ Learn, our wonderful annual Women’s Health exhibition, and guest speakers on such topics as how Israel is depicted in school text books. Without the efforts of so many of our leaders and members, we could not have achieved all that we did this year. In the process, we have enjoyed the camaraderie and the friendship of extraordi nary women, working together to achieve great things. We are indebted to all of you who made a difference - talented women who make this chapter so special and so viable - women with the vision to help us shape the future. To each of you 1 offer a very person al and hearty thank you. Todah rabah.
