The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2007 - Page 5 Comm unity Mews B’nai B’rith Institute of Judaism A Tapestry of Jewish Thought The Institute of Judaism is the hub of the B’nai B’rith Adult Education Program. It provides an opportunity for the individual to confront and clarify questions about Judaism and Jewish life. The participant experiences “Living Judaism” - a unique opportunity for a truly American- Jewish experience in a fellowship setting. . Participants also avail them selves of a variety of activities - religious services, visits to area folk art centers, enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the majes tic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, athletic pursuits such as hiking, tennis and swim ming at a nearby hotel - and just relaxing. This years B’nai B’rith Institute of Judaism will be August 13-16 at Wildacres. Accomodations and Reservations Modem facilities at Wildacres are limited to the first 90 persons applying, thus ensuring a group small enough for pleasant social izing and full participation by everyone. Registration includes tuition, room and board. Reservations will be accepted and rooms assigned in the order they are received. Rooms have two twin beds and private bathrooms. Towels and bed linens are sup plied. Sport clothing is customary; evenings can be cool. Food is served family style with dietary laws observed. Attendees with special dietary requirements must submit them in advance. Curriculum There are four lectures each day. Early and mid-aftemooons are reserved for optional recre ational activities and “schmooz ing.” Entertainment is provided. There are informal patio discus sions with the speakers. Early bird discount - Saye $10 per person if we receive your check by June 1. Program Yaakov Ariel is a professor in the department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a graduate of Hebrew university of Jerusalem and the University of Chicago. His research focuses on Evangelical Christianity and its attitudes towards the Jewish peo ple and the Holy Land; on Christian-Jewish relations in the late modem era; and on the Jewish reaction to modernity and post- modernity. Professor Ariel has published numerous articles and two books on these subjects. His latest book. Evangelizing the Chosen People, was awarded the Albert C. Outler prize by the American Society of Church History. Currently, Professor Ariel is completing a book on Evangelical-Jewish relationship throughout the 19th and 20th cen turies. Ariel will lead the following dis cussions: Evangelical Christians and Jews; Will Hyphenated Judaism Become the Judaism of the 21st Century?; The Construction of Reconstructionist Judaism; and on the patio, Judaism and Interfaith Relations in the 21 st Century. Don Habibi is Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He specializes in political philosophy, ethics, and the philosophy of law. Originally from Los Angeles, Habibi received his BA in History from UCLA, and his Masters and PhD. from Cornell. He came to UNCW in 1988. He is the recipi ent of UNCW’s Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award (1999) and the Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award (2003-2006). He is the author of John Stuart Mill and the Ethic of Human Growth, as well as several scholarly articles on liberalism, utilitarianism, colonialism, law and human rights. Habibi lives in Myrtle Beach, SC, with his wife and five children. Habibi will lead the following discussions: The Arab/Israeli, Israeli/Palestinian, and Fatah/ Hamas Conflicts; Islam and the Clash of Civilization; Current Issues Facing Israel; and on the patio. The Politicization of Human Rights and the Propaganda War. Cantor Hayley Kobilinsky was bom in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Oceanside, Long Island. She pursued a love of music from an early age, specializing in opera, and has performed dozens of operas in leading and supporting roles. Her other great love is Judaism; after having been involved heavily in her home syn agogue in Long Beach, NY, she decided to pursue the cantorate. Her master’s thesis was the first work devoted to a group of women, The Chazzantes.
