The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July 2007 - Page 11 The North Carolina Mountains and Judaism Wildacres Conference Center in Little Switzerland, heart of the beautiful NC Blue Ridge Mountains, will host the 60th annual B’nai B’rith Institute of Judaism, August 13-16. The retreat features three outstanding scholars, three kosher meals a day, and double occupancy rooms with private bath. Three speakers will present a stunning multi-faceted tapestry of ideas. Cantor Hayley Kobilinsky, graduate of the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music and former Julliard student, will speak and sing her topics of Yiddish music, current trends in synagogue music, Israeli pop music, and women as “chaz- zantes.” Prof. Yaakov Ariel of the Department of Religious Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, formerly of Hebrew University, and author of two books, will speak on topics concerning new paths of Judaism in the 21st century, including “hyphenated” Judaism, Reconstructionist Judaism, and interfaith relations. Prof. Don Habibi, professor of philosophy at UNC-Wilmington and recipient of two awards for distinguished teaching, will discuss the current Israeli-Palestinian situation, Fatah/Hamas conflicts, and human rights in a propaganda war. In addition to lectures, patio discussions, and live music at night, there are afternoon “nosh” socials, a welcome wine and cheese party, free tennis lessons. and an evening movie. But as good as this is, best of all is the cool fresh mountain air enjoyed from a rocking chair on the blue stone patio overlooking spectacu lar views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cost is $315 per person for two in a room and $440 per person for one in a room. This includes lodging, kosher meals, lectures, entertainment, and social activi ties. Pre-arrangements can be made for special dietary needs and scheduled golf cart transportation is available to and from Wildacres buildings.
