The Charlotte Jewish News -June-July 2007 - Page 18 Levine-Sklut Judaic Library and Resource Center Author Mark Klempner to Speak in Charlotte Sponsored by the Levine-Sklut /udaic Library and Resource Center, Oasis at the Levine JCC and a generous grant from The North Carolina Humanities Council, Mark Klempner, author of “The Heart Has Reasons” will be speaking Thursday, June 28 at 1 PM at the Levine Jewish Community Center, 5007 Providence Rd. in Charlotte. He will be in the Weinberg Senior Center where coffee and refresh ments will be served. In 1996, Mark Klempner sought out some of the last surviv ing Dutch rescuers of Jewish chil dren to better understand how and why they made their courageous choices. Inspired by their willing ness to risk everything to help oth ers during the war, he became deeply interested in what the res cuers have done with their lives since, and where their moral compasses point today. “You can’t let people be treated in an inhu man way around you. Otherwise you start to tbecome inhuman.” So speaks rescuer Hetty Voute in “The Heart Has Reasons,” a remarkable book that provides both a fresh look at the “righteous gentiles,” and a meditation on Mark Klempner what they might have to teach us more than half a century after they defied the Nazis. What emerges is both a win dow to the past and a vision for the future. If the rescuers could remain committed to making a difference while under the boot of the Nazi regime, we surely have something to learn from them about taking a stand against injustices, about maintaining an open heart, and about not giving in or giving up. Framed by Klempner’s quest for meaning, their words res onate across generations, providing insightful guid ance as to how people of con science can navigate ethically in an increasingly complex world. ^ PART TIME LIBRARY ASSOCIATE NEEDED FOR THE LEVINE SKLUT JUDAIC LIBRARY AND RESOURCE CENTER Library experience and Jewish knowledge required.
