By Lorrie Klemons, publicity Over the past six years since 9/11, I have spent a lot of time thinking about the freedoms that my family and I enjoy, and which I never take for granted, especial ly in light of the unrest and terror ism in the international communi ty today. Today, along with my fellow Americans, I grieve for yet another horrific tragedy on American soil: the bloody mas sacre at Virginia Tech University. As a mother, as a Jew, and as a cit izen of these wonderful United States of America, my heart breaks for each victim of this tragedy, for their families, and for the damage that such an event does to our sense of freedom and safety. What are the signs of someone gone mad? How can it be prevent ed? Can it be forewarned? The news media has used the characteristic of “loner” to describe many of the madmen that have hurt us in the past. Does that mean that every person who is a loner has the potential for such horrific and catastrophic behav ior? I believe that faith can play a role in the prevention of such behavior as it envelops individu als in loving and caring relation ships that uplift the spirit and nur tures the soul. The Jewish faith believes in the concept of community. A faith community built on sharing and caring. A community that reaches out not only to its members, but to those in need. Judaism is a faith that honors and respects all peo ple. It is a faith that recognizes that you can have disagreement without disrespect. It is a faith that respects and values human life. It is a faith that believes in the power of communal prayer. To all Jewish parents and grandparents reading this article, I beg you to instill in your child a sense of Jewish faith. A belief in something greater than the sum of everything else on the planet. A belief in the dignity and value of human life. A belief in a sense of community... and the importance of that community. As you continue to pray for our armed forces and hope for a peaceful world, please include the Virginia Tech victims in your prayers. As a people of faith and as a nation, we must maintain our optimism about the healthy future of life here in America and throughout the rest of the world. We must maintain our hope - HaTikvah — for a lasting peace in the Middle East and for an end to acts of terror against all of God’s children. We must also commit to perpet uating the memories of those Jews who preceded us in eternal life and who played a major role in providing us with the religious freedoms we all enjoy in Charlotte today. Make your commitment right now. Whether you are young or old, healthy or sick, you owe it to yourself and your family to be a part of Charlotte’s only Jewish cemetery. The Hebrew Cemetery Association of Charlotte is com mitted to the continued provision and maintenance of a sanctified and holy final resting place for its fellow Jews. An independent Jewish institution unaffiliated with any local religious organiza tion, the Association is made up of local Jews who care about each other, in life and in death. Members of the Cemetery Association are entitled to greatly reduced rates for plots and funer als after being dues-paying mem bers for a minimum of two years. Send your $72 dues (or dona tion) to the Hebrew Cemetery Association, 5007 Providence Rd, Charlotte, NC 28226. For more information about membership benefits, graves, prepaid funeral costs, or endowment donations, interfaith/cremated cemetery plots, call Cemetery Director Joe Kodsi at 704-576-1859.
