They have all given permission prior to the deaths and through a process called plastination developed by German scientist. Dr. Gunther von Hagens, their muscular struc ture, their organs and many of their entire bodies have been maintained. Even though more than twenty million visitors have visited this exhibit worldwide and gained insight into the awesome nature of the human body, as Jews we need to ask difficult questions before purchasing tickets: How are we meant to treat the bodies of those who have died? Do our stan dards differ if the cadaver is Jewish versus not Jewish? What medical values does this exhibit provide? When do medical values outweigh the Jewish value of hon oring the dead? Temple Beth El Schloss Summer Lecture on August 3 will give you the knowledge and tools to answer these challenging ques tions for yourselves. Dr. Leonard Feld, Chairman of Pediatrics at CMC, Chief Medical Officer of Dr. Leonard Feld Levine Children’s Hospital, and a member of Temple Beth El will pres ent the medical value of this exhib it. A CMC medical ethicist will famil iarize us with the ethical considera tions that need to be addressed. Rabbi Judy Schindler will pres ent the Jewish per spective and, John Mackay, President and CEO of Discovery Place will share the issues the museum considered before bring ing this exhibit to Charlotte. The annual Schloss Summer Lecture was established by Marc and Mattye Silverman in memory of Marc’s uncle, Simeon Archibald “Happy” Schloss, Jr. Happy was one of the original founders and a treasurer of Temple Beth El. He was passion ate about Judaism, about Temple life, and as his name tells you, he was always Happy. Dinner will be served after services followed by the program. The cost of the dinner is $16 per person. Reservations for this pro gram can be made by Wednesday, August 1 at 704-944-6790 or at RSVP@beth-el.com mention the “Schloss Summer Lecture” in the subject or message. TBE Teens Visit Hadera (Continued from page 12) family in Hadera has been untouched by these tragedies. Nothing soothes an emotional experience like a great Yemenite lunch. We were invited to visit the restaurant of our new friend, Amit. The food was wonderful and the friends were even more memorable. When it was time to head back to Jerusalem, everyone was hug ging and making plans to spend time together when the Hadera teens get to Charlotte. This was a day that our teens will never for get because Israel isn’t only about the sites we visited; it’s about the people who live there. A visit to Hadera helps make Israel comes alive. ^
