Levine-Sklut Judaic Library and Resource Center What You Never Asked But Should Know about the Levine-Sklut Judaic Library and Resource Center By Amalia Warshenbrot, Director On Tuesday June 19,1 attended a special reception organized by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) in Scottsdale, AZ. The Levine-Sklut Judaic Library and Resource Center (JLRC) received an accreditation on an advanced level. What does it tell you about the JLRC? Professional librarians, mem bers of AJL evaluated our Center. AJL mission as stated on the web site www.jewishlibraries.org is to “promote Jewish literacy through enhancement of libraries and library resources and through leadership for the profession and practitioners of Judaica librarian- ship. The Association fosters access to information, learning, teaching and research relating to Jews, Judaism, the Jewish experi ence and Israel.” We submitted a detailed report on our administrative structure, job responsibilities for each posi tion. Many of our staff hold advanced degrees and are mem bers of AJL and CAJE (Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education) as well as Historical Societies. The Library budget and mission statement were sent. Collection management and the extent to which the library’s collection addresses vari ations of Jewish experience were in accord with the recommenda tions of AJL. We are among many libraries that benefit from technology which is current ly integrated in the Library. We plan to further expand the use of technology to benefit our users. We described the Library pro grams and outreach and the ways in which it supports and comple ments the programs of the syna gogues, Levine Jewish Community Center and all the schools in Shalom Park. Twice a year we evaluate the adequacy of the col lection and services in relation to the needs of seven schools and our programming. We submitted statistical data, which our software is capable of doing, on the number of users divided by age group, institution and many other criteria as well as books, DVDs, videos, games and teaching aids and the way they are catalogued and placed on shelves. Emphasis was given to the num ber of items that were published in the last five years and the large number of new items added since we opened. We were proud to send pictures of each room in our beautiful library and show that we have a separate room for children as well as a teacher’s pedagogic center, well lit and user friendly. We list ed organizations that support us and make it possible for us to be open thirty nine hours a week all year round. Special thanks to Cynthia Chapman, who compiled all the information that was needed for accreditation and added newspa per articles, flyers and many pho tos taken by Sue Klein. We also thank all the Founders of the Center, who continue to support us with funds and books.
