along with Charlotte Mayor Pat
McCrory and Charlotte
Congressman Mel Watt as part of
FUMC’s annual community
recognition service. Katz and the
other honorees were saluted for
their community service and lead
ership. Katz, the man who has
been dubbed Carolina’s conserva
tive conscience, noted that due to
the seating arrangements in the
pew he wound up to the left of
Congressman Watt. Given that
Watt is one of the most liberal
members of Congress, Katz
quipped that “I am flattered by the
honor bestowed by First United
Methodist Church. September 9 is
my birthday so it took 43 years
and the hand of God to place me to
the left of Mel Watt.”
