The Charlotte Jewish News - October 2007 - Page 7 The End and the Beginning: Torah Cycle 5768 A Reconstructionist Thought: One of our most prominent char acteristics is that we encourage everyone to participate in the group, whether in the service, leadership roles, adult education, or in other roles of assistance. As lay leaders, we celebrate our serv ices by leading various parts of the service: pzukei d’zimrah, the Amidah, the Torah service, and concluding prayers. Our members are adept Torah readers, willing cantors, and give insightful Dvrei Torah. We celebrate Simchat Torah October 4 with the dedication of a newly restored Torah Scroll: October 4 at 6:15 PM we will enjoy a catered dinner (RSVP by September 27, $10 non-members) October 4 at 7:30 PM we share dessert and community October 4 at 8 PM we cele brate the dedication of our new Torah (community welcome) October 6 at 10 AM we will celebrate Shabbat with our new Torah (community welcome) Rabbi Kevin Hale, the Torah sofer who has most recently refur bished the Torah scroll that we will dedicate at Simchat Torah, comes to us from Northampton, MA. Rabbi Hale is the first Reconstructionist Sofer. He is a graduate of Yale University and was ordained in 1997 by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. A student of Dr. Eric Ray, Rabbi Hale is committed to enabling the 613th mitzvah and to bringing a revitalized delight in writing, restoring and teaching about torah. Rabbi Hale also serves as the part-time Jewish Chaplain of Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, and is director of the Ray Torah Institute. The restored Torah Scroll comes to us from Poland via Israel. The scroll, in “lovely con dition for its age,” is estimated to be just less than one hundred years old. The parchment is of a good quality, unlike the parchments used in many shtetls of the time. Rabbi Hale noted that the scroll is in very good condition, and had been inspected, small repairs made and several letters remediat ed sometime in the past. Please feel free to join us, our services are warm and friendly, a family atmosphere in which all Jews can feel comfortable, and guests are always welcome. We also encourage participation in our services including leading sec tions of the service and reading the Torah.
