The youngest Sunday School
class at Temple Emanuel in
Gastonia has a new teacher and
curriculum this year. Devorah
Leah Gordon is teaching the
Aleph class, composed of
Kindergarten, first and second
graders. Our principal, Donna
DeGroot, has worked with
Devorah Leah to develop the new
curriculum. Donna is very excited
about our new teacher and our stu
dents.
Sunday School continues to be
a vital part of our children’s reli
gious education. Our Religious
School committee chair, Jason
Gluck, has big plans for the
2007/2008 school year. We have
already had Sukkah hop where
we visited both the Miller and
Epstein family’ s Sukkahs and
enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the
Shaw’s.
There are many other wonder
ful happenings at our Temple. On
August 26, the Sisterhood hon
ored long time member Evelyn
Osborne and past president,
Hanah Hawkins at a luncheon
hosted by Temple President
Stacey Bhalla. We had a wonder
ful turnout to show our apprecia
tion for all they have done for both
the Temple and Sisterhood. Our
“older” members .shared happy
memories of their experiences. It
demonstrated to all our newcom
ers the sense of community we
have always had here and the
immediate acceptance of anyone
new to the area. Our Sisterhood
President, Talia Wurcherer, has

some wonderful ideas to bring to
the group. The first Friday night
of each month, preceding our
monthly Saturday morning
Shabbat Service, is Ladies’ Night
Out. We all join at a member’s
home for wonderful companion
ship and our monthly meeting.
Adult Education continues to
be important at Temple Emanuel.
On October 8, Mark Epstein pre
sented an audio-visual presenta
tion titled The Jewish Experience
in Lithuania: A Personal &
Collective Litvak Journey. Mark
spoke of his travels and experi
ences while searching for his fam
ily’s roots. We will also continue
Mussar studies with our Spiritual
Leader, Dr. Charlie Brown. This
class will begin again on
Wednesday, November 7, and
continue for each consecutive
Wednesday at 7:30 PM at the
Temple. Of course no one can for
get our Sunday Schmooze.
Congratulations go to both
Julia Wirth and Daniel Safirstein
on becoming B’nai Mitzvah. We
join their families to welcome
them as adults in the congregation
(as long as they realize they’re
still kids at home).
