Havurat Tikvah Starts the New Year with
New Officers
A Reconstructionist Thought.
We partner with our rabbinical and
cantorial professionals to derive
the best from our time together in
services and educational activities.
Our members bring their many
individual lifetimes of experience
to our congregational gatherings.
We appreciate the input of our rab
binic student who brings new per
spective and creative insight to our
group.
Our new rabbinic student,
Arlene Berger, is in her second
year at Reconstructionist
Rabbinical College in
Philadelphia. Growing up, she was
a yeshiva student with a dream of
following a rabbinic path; her
orthodox tradition precluded that
dream. As she became an adult,
she volunteered and served in
many Jewish educational and serv
ice venues. Arlene brings her full
and rich Jewish experiences to
Havurat Tikvah. She is creative
and dedicated to bringing new per
spectives to the Havurat from
the RRC in Philadelphia. Arlene
will be celebrating Shabbat with
the Havurat Saturday, November
17. We look forward to her visit, as
much as we enjoyed her first visit
with us at Selichot.
Havurat Tikvah installs new
officers with the November board
meeting. Our new co-roshim are
Helen Lipman and Ellen Myers.
Also new this year: Adult
Education - Elaine Chemotsky;
Religious School - Gil Roth;
Religious/Ritual - Reuven Green;
Jewish
Reconstructionist
Federation
Social Action - Penni Ackerman-
Powell; Community Relations -
David Holloman; New Member -
Brian Feinglass; and At-Large -
Sharon Kugelmass. Retaining their
board seats: Treasurer - Gwen
Offerdahl; Membership - Laura
Sussman-Randall; and Scribe -
Alan Kaplan.
It is a deep-seated Reconstructionist
perspective that our members are
active in our congregations. We
enliven our group dynamic by fol
lowing a regimen of Jewish
values-based decision-making
derived from a democratic and
inclusive process, with reflection
on the impact on the membership
through study and research of the
universal Jewish community.
Please join us: our services are
warm and friendly, a family atmos
phere in which all Jews can feel
comfortable, and guests are always
welcome. We also welcome and
encourage participation in our
services including leading sections
of the service and reading the
Torah.
Havurat Tikvah is an affiliate of
the Jewish Reconstructionist
Federation and we celebrate all
services and many events in the
Fellowship Hall of St. Andrews
Presbyterian Church, 2201
Springdale Ave. (at Magnolia) in
the Dilworth neighborhood of
Charlotte.

Inclusion Shabbat Addresses Area’s
Jewish Impoverished
Temple Beth El’s Chavurah
Keshet will host Inclusion
Shabbat on Friday, November 30,
at the 8:00 PM Shabbat service.
The event will concentrate on the
issue of poverty in the Charlotte
Jewish community, with an eye
opening keynote address by
Stephanie Starr, Executive
Director of Jewish Family
Services.
Although it is not widely
acknowledged, the invisible
scourge of poverty affects many
families within the Jewish com
munity. The loss of hope and the
sense of despair can be debilitat
ing. Fortunately, there are avenues
of help for those caught in the
cycle of poverty, among them the
synagogues and Jewish Family
Services. Ms. Starr will address
the roots of poverty in our com
munity and the responses to it.
Please join us for an enlightening
program on an issue that runs
deeper than we often care to
admit.
TEmPLE BETH EL
Chavurah Keshet will be col
lecting non-perishable food items
throughout the weekend in spe
cially marked baskets in the lobby
of Temple Beth El. All donations
will go directly to the food pantry
at Jewish Family Services. 4*
