The Charlotte Jewish News -December 2007 - Page 20 Women’s News Lighting Our Way By Heidi Rotberg, President, Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah The light of the menorah is more than, a reminder of ancient miracles. It is intended to illumi nate and inspire our lives today. At Hadassah, we have been kindling the light of hope for decades. The flickering lights remind us of our awesome opportunities and responsibilities as partners with the people of Israel and as partners in our communities. It is a reaffirma tion of the power within each of us to make a difference in our own lives and in our work in Hadassah. As the hanukiah sits high atop Hadassah Hospital, Ein Kerem, we are reminded of our mission of healing, research and unparalleled patient care. And at this time of year, we think of children and we remember those in Youth Aliyah who need a second chance. We are reminded how the work of our hands changes lives. We model through word and deed and know that mitzvahs great and small make a difference. In our communities, our members are involved in a kaleidoscope of activities and programs. We help children learn to read; we bring joy to the elderly in local nursing homes and senior residents; we bring gifts and hope to women and children in protective shelters; we knit for babies in hospitals and bring books to clinics; we educate our communities on issues of importance to us all. We let people know that they are not forgotten and that Hadassah cares. We remember that life is fragile. The light of the menorah illumi nates our world for eight days. It serves to remind us of the power of caring and the capacity within each of us to perform acts of kindness that change people’s lives. We see the flames of the hanukiah and are reminded of the enormous poten tial from that light.
