We support programs for Jews in need in Charlotte, Israel and throughout the world, pro viding food for the hungry and counseling for the troubled, spearheading rescue and relief efforts for isolated Jews in dis tressed regions and funding innovative Jewish educational and unity initiatives. We create a sense of commu nity for more than 11,000 Jewish residents in Charlotte by creating and supporting pro grams to further Jewish learn ing, identity, pride and culture. We meet the challenge of pro viding for the needs of our Jewish brethren, wherever they may be, from young children and families to seniors. The Federation is a non-prof it organization dedicated to pro viding connection, advocacy, education and care for anyone in need through our network of beneficiary and constituency agencies and local Jewish organizations. Serving as an umbrella for the Charlotte Jewish community, the Federation carefully examines local and overseas priority needs and allocates accordingly. Because Federation giving touches so many lives, one gift is maximized to support many programs that ensure a strong vibrant Jewish community. Allocations decisions, while reflecting Jewish values, are a function of available resources, needs in the community, the expertise of a long-term rela tionship with Federation agen cies and other partners. The allocations process is one of the primary functions the Federation fills in planning for the emerging and future needs of our community. Under the leadership of Holly Levinson and Judi Strause and their tire less committee (see sidebar), this year, we were able to allo cate $2,991,433* to help build and maintain Jewish continuity, and to protect the interests of the Jewish people in Charlotte, in Israel and worldwide. This year every agency received an increase in their allocation; fur thermore, we distributed $73,000 additional dollars over last year. Giving tzedakah to an umbrella organization such as Federation, which then distrib utes it to a number of member agencies, has its roots in early Jewish history. In small towns and large cities, donations were given to a communal kupah as an expression of devotion to the entire Jewish people. It demon strates a love of community that is without limitation, a proud statement of commit ment to our individual community and to every individual Jew. The largest portion of the money remains here in our local community where everyone from the smallest preschooler to the elderly, and every one in between, directly experiences your gift to the Federation. The remaining 30% of dona tions goes to Israel and Overseas needs.
