March; Madeline’s in
November). That represents
approximately 232 seg
ments! The full size blankets
will be donated to Warm Up
America, which is headquar
tered in Gastonia. They have
a kids’ division where they
encourage kids’ groups to do
this type of project and then
help the kids find agencies
that need the blankets at
donation time.
“These girls have worked
so hard,” says Kim Bell of
Warm Up America. “I want
to make sure that they know that
their blankets will go to people
who are in great need. Some of our
clients include homeless
shelters, the Red Cross,
and children’s hospi
tals.”
One night the girls
got together for a knit
ting party and there were
32 girls and moms knit
ting segments for the
blankets. At this point
they have collected
close to 100 blanket seg
ments. The girls will
continue knitting and the
knitting parties will con-

Annie Brown was looking for a
community service project for her
upcoming Bat Mitzvah at Temple
Israel. One thing she loves to do is
knit, and she wanted her project to
be fun while at the same time
helpful to people.
Coincidentally, her friend
Madeline Rodgers was thinking
about what she could do for her
community service project for her
Bat Mitzvah at Temple Beth El.
Not only does she also love to
knit, but she knows so many other
girls that love to knit. Between
Annie and Madeline, they created
a group project to knit blankets for
patients at Levine Children’s
Hospital with more than 30 of
their friends.
They and their friends knit 7” x
9” segments that they then sew
together to make complete
afghans. The goal is for each girl
to complete two baby blankets for
Levine Children’s Hospital and at
least two full-sized blankets by the

When Anita Grey and Lynn
Edelstein created Chai Hopes as
both a knitting and a social group
for their friends, they didn’t real
ize how much it would grow. Just
by word of mouth, there are now
more than 60 Chai Hopes knitters
creating blankets for patients at
Levine Children’s Hospital.
Edelstein, of Yours Truly
Needlepoint and Knitting, pro
vides the wool wholesale to the
group for their first blanket, and
once one blanket is completed, she
provides the yam to the knitter for
free. Member of the JCC Senior
Adult Group, Oasis, receive all
their yam for free.
No membership is necessary to
join Chai Hopes. Just show up to
the Jewish Community Center on
Wednesday morning from 9 AM-
12 noon and bring your own nee
dles (or you can purchase needles
from Chai Hopes). The group will
provide the necessary pattern and
dimensions of the blankets, and
then you just knit and socialize
with the charming ladies that are
present.
Not everyone comes every
week. Generally there are about a
dozen women at the Levine JCC
on any given Wednesday morning.
But even if they don’t come, many
women continue to knit. Even
people who have moved out of the
community are knitting for Chai
Hopes, reports Grey. Many have
also made donations. “This thing
has just snowballed,” Grey contin
ues.
Elaine Denenberg is planning to
use the blankets as centerpieces at
the Kiddush Luncheon for her
children’s B’nei Mitzvah. She
hopes this will raise awareness of
the project to a whole new group
of people.
