Our very own Mary Thomas
returns joined by her classmate,
Josh Breitzer, teaming up with
Cantor Bernard for a weekend of
worship and music on January 11
and 12. Mary and Josh are second-
year cantorial students at Hebrew
Union College’s School of Sacred
Music in New York. They will
participate in services on Friday
night and Saturday morning, and
will present a music program on
Saturday evening with Cantor
Bernard.
Join us Friday evening for
Kabbalat Shabbat at 6 PM and our
Shabbat Evening Worship at 8 PM
as the duets that Mary Thomas and
Cantor Bernard shared at worship
blossom into trios. On Saturday
morning. Congregational Shabbat
will feature the music of our Teen
Vocal Ensemble and Teen Band
along with our guests. All promise
to be lively and uplifting worship
services.
On Saturday evening, Mary
Thomas, Josh Breitzer and Cantor
Bernard will offer a music pro
gram of personal favorites with
Havdallah and desserts in the
David Silverman Social Hall.
Admission is free. Everyone is
invited to join for this casual
evening of music and fun.
This weekend is made possible
by the Marian Siegel Bennett
Music Fund, begun by Rabbi Jim
Bennett and his siblings in honor
of their mother. We hope this will
be the first of many beautiful pro
grams made possible by the gen
erosity of Rabbi Bennett and his
family. ^

Happy New Year!
Remember Malak Jewelers for
Engagements, Anniversaries, Birthdays,
Bridal, Baby Gifts, Bar & Bat Mitzvahs
As many Jews headed to
Alabama to march side by side
with African Americans during the
Civil Rights Era to join in the fight
for freedom and justice, Temple
Beth El will celebrate the Shabbat
preceding the birthday of the late
Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
by warmly welcoming their broth
ers and sisters from Saint Paul
Baptist Church into their midst.
Dr. Gregory Moss, Sr. will deliver
an inspired sermon reflecting on
issues of joint concern to the
Jewish and African American
community and Saint Paul Baptist
Church’s spirited and spiritual
choir will join together with Beth
El’s choir to lift the community’s
prayers heavenward on the wings
of song. The MLK Shabbat serv
ice is consistently a highlight of
Beth El’s year - from the gifted
voices of the two choirs, the
warmth of the two congregations,
and the consistently passionate
sermons of guest preachers — this
year promises to be no different.
Pastor Moss received his
Bachelor of Arts from University
of North Carolina at Charlotte, his
Masters degree of Theology
from Southeastern Theological
Seminary, and his Doctorate of
Ministry from McCormick
Theological Seminary. For ten
years, Dr. Moss has led his vibrant
and growing congregation. He has
a heart for God, a heart for service
and a heart for people. Pastor
Moss and his church, like Beth El,
are committed to addressing the
ills and issues of our day.

already participating, Partners in
Torah has approached the
Charlotte Torah Center to bring
the program to our city.
So, what is Partners in Torah?
Partners in Torah provides men
and women who have an interest
in Jewish study - but may lack the
self-motivation or academic back
ground - with their own personal
telephone “mentor,” to study any
topic in Judaism of mutual inter
est. Partners study approximately
one hour a week at a mutually
agreed upon time.
Expert staff match Jews who
want to know more about Judaism
with Jews who want to share their
knowledge. Although two people
may be matched because one per
son has expressed an interest in a
particular subject while the other
person has a level of proficiency
in that same area, the nature of
their relationship is peer-to-peer,
creating a comfortable and non
threatening learning environment.
