The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2008 - Page 2 JEWISH FEDERATION NEWS I ^ Mission of Sisterhood; Women from Charlotte ^ Travel to Poland and Israel July 9-20 ,e'i EWISH^ y RATION^ FED OF GREATER CHARLOTTE Local, Global, Eternal i i i i i i This July, the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte invites women from our com munity to join us in a mission of sisterhood together with women from our sister city of Hadera, Israel. We will spend five days in Poland and five days in Israel, learning together and experiencing both our history and our homeland. The mission will be packed with incredible sites of Jewish past and present. The first Shabbat will include a visit to a Polish synagogue that still func tions. We will stroll through the old narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter in Krakow, where the museum of Judaism and the many synagogue buildings still stand and where the Krakow Jewish festival happens every summer. We will visit Janusz Korczak’s Jewish orphanage and learn about the man who never left his children even as he had the chance to save himself dur ing the Holocaust, holding their hands and telling them happy stories so they would not be afraid. There will also be visits to multiple concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau, to com memorate our family and friends who went through the Holocaust. The group will then arrive in The beach at Caesaria. Israel, where we will celebrate our homeland and spend five days touring the country, meet ing our Israeli friends’ families, and of course, shopping. We will spend time in Jerusalem, includ ing visits to the Old City, the Western Wall, and the center of town. We will travel north to the beautiful Carmel Mountains and experience a Druze community in Dalyat El-Carmel. The stun ning cities of Haifa and Caesaria will overwhelm you as we. visit the “eighth wonder of the world,” the Bahai Gardens, and the ancient ruins in the city that King Herod the Great dedicated to Caesar Augustus over 2,000 years ago. Before leaving, we will spend the weekend with our new Israeli friends in their home of Hadera, meeting their fami lies, walking their streets, relax ing on their beach and visiting their stores and cafes.
