The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2008 - Page 20 Synagogues Congregations Havurat Tikvah A Reconstructionist Thought: B’resheit - Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, matriculated Jewish Theological Seminary in 1902, taught at JTS for 50 years, served as an orthodox Rabbi, assisted in creating the orthodox Young Israel movement and the Jewish commu nity center concept. In 1968, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College was formed to develop Rabfei Kaplan’s approach to Judaism. Kaplan had a full and tumultuous career, much in the same way that all Jews have had to weather the world - but with a full plate on our laps, we press forward ^ to cultivate our Jewish culture wherever we || live and in whatever ” circumstance we find ourselves as a people. After a wonderous Chanukah celebration and newcomer welcome on December 9, Havurat Tikvah assisted with Friendship Trays on December 24 and 31, and at Samaritan House, as we continued our tradition of tikkun olam in our Charlotte community. We cultivate our Jewish culture in the ^ context of our communi- ty, helping many outside JPI^ of the Jewish community, ^ as well as our own. Our February Monthly Community Shabbat will be on Saturday, February 16. At our Community Shabbat services we share kosher dairy or pareve main course dishes and desserts - this Shabbat we are looking to share traditional foods from our heritage and back grounds. We look forward to Ashkenazi, Sephadric and Israeli dishes. Upcoming at the beginning of March, come join us as we lunch and shop at Gleiberman’s Kosher Mart on March 9 at 12 noon. We have enjoyed seeing old and new friends each time we congregate for this delicious time together. Our student Rabbi, Arlene Berger, will be joining us for our Monthly Community Shabbat on March 15, including Saturday evening and Sunday morning pro grams to prepare us for Purim - more details in the March issue. Please join us in warm and friendly services, a family atmos phere in which all Jews can feel comfortable, and guests are always welcome. We also wel come and encourage participation in our services including leading Jewish Reconstructionist Federation sections of the service and reading the Torah. Prospective new mem bers are welcome; we are a grow ing congregation of 49 households as of December 2007. Havurat Tikvah is an affiliate of the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation. We celebrate all serv ices and many events in the Fellowship Hall of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 2201 Springdale Ave. (at Magnolia) in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte. For an updated calendar and information for Havurat Tikvah, visit our website at www.Havurat Tikvah.org or call 704-545- 0894. Fern Sanderson Thank You, Fern Lubavitch of North Carolina extends gratitude and best wishes to Fern Sanderson, who is retiring from her position as Director of The Jewish Preschool on Sardis. Fern began teaching at Lubavitch’s tiny preschool of 16 children in 1987. At that time no one could pre dict that she would become the director in 1992 and would over see the preschool’s growth to the current 140-student population. It is obvious to anyone who vis its The Jewish Preschool on Sardis is that Fern’s leadership and com mitment to the school have been the determining factors in the school’s success. The reason for this success is actually more than commitment. To Fern, this has not been merely a job, but rather a mission to see precious children deyelop into lit tle menschen. To Fern, each child in the preschool represents an entire world. Now imagine carry- ■U. SWIMMER FAMILY PORTRAITS Do you know tllis woman? We actually hope you don’t. One of Fern’s many amusing memories is how, when she started at the preschool, the location (the old Armstrong House) was not procured until the day before school was to open. Undaunted, Fern proceeded to clean and deco rate the ancient house and, twenty- four hours later, to welcome her students. She certainly didn’t know that several years later she would participate in the planning and building of the lovely facility that now houses the school. Jen Lahn, the current assistant to the Director, will assume the role of Director on February 15. Jen has taught at JPS for several years. She holds certification in preschool education and is also a licensed social worker. Jen looks forward to carrying on Fern’s legacy of a warm, supportive envi ronment in which Jewish children receive an excellent Jewish and secular education that establishes the foundation for their fumre. We wish Fern and her husband, Elliot, health and contentment during their retirement.
