Menaker & Rodney, DDS 2711 Randolph Rd., Suite 205 704.377.2503 North Carolina State Bar Approves Upcoming Jewish Learning Institute Talmudic Ethics Course for CUE Ethics Credits We are pleased to inform our legal community that the North Carolina State Bar has approved our upcoming JLI course on ethics for legal CLE ethics credit for North Carolina attorneys. The JLI course, which will meet six con secutive Tuesdays (evening) or Wednesdays (morning) beginning May 13 and 14, is open to the entire community. Talmudic law is a 3000-year- old system of jurisprudence that continues to develop organically and to be practiced today. In the upcoming JLI course, which begins this coming month of May, we look at the classic books, codes, commentaries, and respon- sa that are the sources of Jewish law and its thought, as well as con temporary cases in civil law that have come before the beit din, the court system of Jewish law. Although modem life brings many new dilemmas, the beit din decides law by taking into account precedent as found in the Talmud and other Jewish legal literature. The focus of the course is ethics. Jewish law has been wrestling with the relationship between ethics and law for more than three millennia. It offers a rich storehouse of insight that can directly benefit any legal profes sional. Aside from the ever-larger role that civility plays in a much interconnected global economy, the characteristic emphasis of Jewish law on what the prophets call tzedek—righteousness—■ offers a unique model of how a system of law can maintain throughout time the allegiance and even the affection of those under its governance. As we examine these cases and the relevant sources that inform the decisions, we will compare the Talmud’s underlying principles with the philosophic infrastructure of the American legal system. Not only will differences and similari ties be revealed, but also a wealth of relevant insight into the impor tance of a sound ethical backbone to the health of American govern ment and American law. The classes will be held at the Lubavitch Educational Center at 6619 Sardis Road in Charlotte. Tuesday classes will be held beginning on May 13, from 7:30-9 PM. Wednesday classes will be held beginning on May 14, from 11 AM-12:30 PM. The classes will be taught by Rabbi Yossi Groner (evening) and Rabbi Shlomo Cohen (morning).
