The Charlotte Jewish News - August 2008 - Page 15 Chavurah-Without-Walls Presents “Hot-Button Judaism” Chavurah-Without-Walls, is an extended family of Jews (a Chavurah) from all walks of the Charlotte area Jewish community. We meet monthly, usually in pri vate homes, for informal, interest ing, educational, and social events. We are made up of mem bers of the Charlotte Jewish Community devoted to increasing inter-congregational social, spiri tual and intellectual contact among the Jews of the area. We are sponsoring a series of lec tures/discussions in August enti tled “Hot-Button Judaism.” The presenter will be Dr. Jeffrey Poelvoorde, Associate Professor of Political Science at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, and a member of the Charlotte Jewish Community for seven years. The aim of the programs is, first, to gather members of Charlotte’s various Jewish organi zations and congregations together to eat (always a critical priority). The lectures/discussions will be held at Gleiberman’s Kosher Market and Delicatessen and will begin at 12:30 PM on Sundays, while we enjoy lunch. Secondly, we shall examine contemporary (and controversial) issues in American life and society that Judaism affects. What kinds of issues will we be looking at? Abortion, same-sex marriage, religion in the public sphere, environmentalism, wel fare, the War on Terror, just to name a few. In each presentation, Poelvoorde will sketch out how the issue emerges in American life and politics, what the traditional Jewish sources suggest as a start ing point towards the issue, and how the various Jewish denomina tions have come to formulate their positions. The discussion, debate and argument will follow. For a stimulating, educational and social interchange with other members of the Charlotte Jewish community, be sure to reserve Sunday, August 24 (Topic: Abortion) from 12:30-2:30 PM at Gleiberman’s Kosher Market and Delicatessen. The charge is $7 for lecture only, and $8 for food ($2 discount for the combination if you register early by e-mail). There will be a choice of three dishes, two meat and one vegetar ian. We will be raffling free lec tures and meals for future events.
