She is in her eleventh year teaching kinder garteners and enjoys the chal lenges and rewards of working with these tiny scholars. Barbara has taught in private, public and charter schools and is quite impressed by her students’ curios ity and excitement for learning. In her 20 years of teaching, she has seen many changes in educa tion including more demanding curricula, as well as the use of technology and computers in the classroom setting. The children love it. Notwithstanding, old favorites such as Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar are still crowd pleasers for her six and under group. If you are looking for Ms. Sobota, simply follow the trail of scarlet and gray. This Buckeyes fan is a serious football and ice hockey fan and loves to cheer on her favorite team. Join us in giving New CJDS teachers, Barbara Sobota Kathy Otte. Barbara Sobota a cheer. Kathy Otte, a child of a US diplomat, brings to CJDS a diverse cultural background. She spent time living in Thailand and Japan as a child and understands the challenges of fresh beginnings and going to school in new sur roundings. She offers her Junior Kindergarten students the right mix of empathy and encourage ment as they begin their educational journey. Airman Otte was a lin guist in the US Air Force and offered her services in cryptology. When she start ed a family of her own, she decided to retire from the Air Force and start anew in the field of education. Kathy, a Master of Arts graduate from UNC- Charlotte, was the director of a pre-school at an American base in Korea. She has authored Headstart curriculum and is entering her eighth year as a class room teacher. Not only is Ms. Otte a teacher here at CJDS, but this mother of three also teaches edu cation courses at Stanley Community College. Do you won der when she sleeps? When she is not teaching, Kathy enjoys traveling and ethnic cuisine. Be sure to welcome Kathy Otte to the community. and A “Corny” Sukkot Celebration for CJDS One of the prime objectives of Charlotte Jewish Day School is to show its students the joy and excitement of celebrating every Jewish holiday. Sukkot presents the perfect opportunity to step “outside the box” and provide the children with an experience that they will remember for a lifetime. This year the entire student body of 155 students from Junior Kindergarten through eighth grade and CJDS faculty will spend a day of Sukkot fun at the CountryTimes Farm Corn Maze near Indian Trail. The maze will be closed to the public for this unique event. Our Middle School students will keep a watchful eye on their kindergarten “buddies” and help them navigate the maze. A Sukkah-mobile will accompany the trip, so that every student will be able to bless the lulav and etrog and have a snack in a sukkah. Day school staff will facilitate holi day-related games. For exam ple, teachers will be stationed at various points in the maze, and students will have to answer Sukkot questions in order to proceed to other sec tions of the maze. A picnic lunch will be provided by CJDS. Transportation details remain a top secret at this time. In years past, students have been greeted by such unusual modes of travel as a miniature train and a wagon pulled by huge Belgian horses as they traveled through the Lansdowne neighborhood for “sukkah-hopping.” What could top these? Suffice it to say that the students are in for a fabulous sur prise. The students and staff of Charlotte Jewish Day School wish everyone a wonderful holiday sea son, with the hope that Jews everywhere will experience a year of peace and contentment.
