JEWISH FEE>ERAnON NEWS
Are You a Newcomer? JCRC Kicks Off Speakers Bureau
Newcomer (noo-kuhm-er)
noun. (1) one who as recently
arrived; (2) any person who has
not engaged with the organized
Jewish community for a signif
icant amount of time (years or
ever) and for any number of
reasons; (3) one with the poten
tial to grow our community, if
properly welcomed; (4) a.k.a.
“newbie.”
Now you know who we con
sider a newcomer. Here are
answers to other pertinent ques
tion you might ask;
Who is moving here? A
diversity of people find their
way to Charlotte, from recent
college graduates to retirees,
from singles to newly married,
fi’om young families to empty
nesters.
Why do they choose
Charlotte? The most common
ly expressed reasons (not in
order of importance) are: I/we
were transferred here; job offer
I could not refuse; love the
weather - not too hot, not too
cold; our parents, children
and/or grandchildren live in
Charlotte; the cost of
living/housing is reasonable
compared to other cities; or a
combination of the above.
Once we know where they
came from and what brought
them here, we begin our
process of relationship building
and connecting. They are imme
diately placed in the Jewish
Federation’s database and begin
receiving all community mail
ings.
Some newcomers get
involved immediately, especial
ly those who enroll their chil
dren in our Jewish preschools
and day school, while others
connect through synagogue
involvement and membership
in the Levine JCC, Hadassah,
Men’s Clubs, Sisterhood, etc.
But there are many, who, for a
variety of reasons, do not make

The Jewish Community
Relations Council (JCRC)
kicked off its Speakers Bureau
this month by welcoming
Martine Katz fi’om the Jewish
Council for Public Affairs
(JCPA) in New York. The group
came together to begin dialogue
on education and advocacy on
behalf of Israel, and how we can
spread this message to the
greater Charlotte community.
The introduction of the presenta
tion and its goals from Martine
was an excellent start to spear
heading this initiative.
Moving forward, this select
group will work to achieve a few
goals of their own: The first, to
educate themselves on all things
Israel, regarding the history, the
culture, and even visions for the
future. The second, to create the
presentation appropriate for the
Charlotte community. Third, to
discuss venues and how to reach
those venues. And finally, mar
keting and communications
strategies.
Coming up next, the Speakers
Bureau will convene many times
to begin achieving those goals.
Our next large event, open to the
greater Charlotte community,
