Make a “Reel” Difference: Sponsor the 5th Anniversary
Charlotte Jewish Film Festival
Saturday, February 28 - Sunday March 8, 2009
Planning is now underway for
the 5th Anniversary Charlotte
Jewish Film Festival February 28
- March 8, 2009. The Festival’s
ability to grow and deliver a qual
ity product is directly related to
the support it receives from
patrons and corporate sponsors.
We hope we can count on you to
help us make our 5th Anniversary
Festival the best yet.
Over the last five years, the
Charlotte community’s enthusi
asm for the Festival has been fan
tastic, and the Festival’s list of
patrons and corporate sponsors
has grown. The arts community
has shown its support, too, as is
illustrated by this year’s increased
grant from the Arts and Science
Council. But continued and
expanded community support is

vital.
Since its inception in 2005, The
Charlotte Jewish Film Festival has
seen dramatic changes. Our first
year, we showed one film to
roughly 100 people. Last year, the
Festival was eight days long and
attendance soared to 1,300. Today,
the Festival counts as its partners
the likes of Mecklenburg
Ministries, the Mint Museum of
Art and the Latin American
Coalition.
This year we also anticipate
expanding the Festival to the Lake
Norman community, providing an
early and late screening on
Opening Night to accommodate a
wider audience, continuing to
offer second screenings of popular
films and flying in award-winning
filmmakers to present their films.
To make these and other innova
tions possible, we need your sup
port.
To acknowledge our top
patrons and sponsors during this
special 5th anniversary year, we
will be holding an exclusive VIP
Screening and Cocktail Party
November 12, at Byron’s in the
Design Center at South End.
Patrons who contribute at the $250
level and above will join
Corporate Sponsors at the $500
level and above, Community
Partners, and Festival Leaders at
this very special event. We would
be delighted to save seats for you.
Please contact us by November 1.

New Cookbook to Benefit Juvenile
Diabetes
Stacey Simms is a very talented
woman. She can do a lot of things.
She can host her own radio show;
she can speak magnificently and
compellingly at public events; she
can raise two children and she can
share her life with her husband;
she can volunteer for the Lake
Norman Jewish Congregation. But
she can’t cook.
That’s why she wrote I Can’t
Cook, But I Know Someone Who
Can. “Twenty-five Charlotte chefs
gave me 70 recipes and I tie the
book together with stories of my
many kitchen disasters,” says
Simms. And Carolina Panthers
Coach John Fox contributed the
foreword.
But the most important thing to
Stacey about this book is that the
profits will be donated to Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation of
Charlotte. Her three-year-old son
has type 1 diabetes and it’s obvi
ously a cause very close to her
heart. You can see more about her
book at the WBT website
www.goodmoming.wbt.com.
The book was released
September 13 and there will be a
speaking engagement in
November. Watch for more infor
mation in the next issue of The
Charlotte Jewish News. ^
Newcomers

immediate connections. We don’t
give up on them but continue our
cultivation process by creating
ongoing, welcoming opportunities
(i.e., Newcomer Schmoozes,
Uptowners: Nosh and Network,
Shalom Baby, and YAD).
No mitzvah is repeated more
often in the Torah than “welcom
ing the stranger.” (Stranger is not
our preferred translation, so we say
“newcomer.”) Each of us is an
ambassador; we may be the new
comer’s first Jewish contact.
Therefore, the welcoming we
extend is most important and
makes the greatest impression.
If you have a new neighbor, co
worker or just met someone new,
please let us know so that we, too,
can welcome them warmly into
our Jewish community.
