The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2008 - Page 9 New Israel Schwartz Torah Ceremony on Sunday, December 7 at Ohr HaTorah The new community Torah launched by Larry Schwartz in memory of his father Israel (Lou) Schwartz will be completed on Sunday, December 7, at Ohr HaTorah. We invite you to a very special ceremony where you will watch the scribe complete the last lines of our new Torah. The cere mony will begin at 12 noon with festivities that will follow on the front lawn of Ohr HaTorah, including live music and a joyous Chupah ceremony. The festivities are open to the entire community. The Torah proj ect is being sponsored by a cross section of members of the wider Charlotte Jewish community. Some have sponsored the five books, and some have sponsored portions in the Torah. Others have sponsored verses and words. There is some availability in spon soring the Torah before it is com pleted on December 7. Ohr HaTorah will host its very popular Friday night Shabbaton on November 14 as a warm-up for the fall/winter season. The Shabbaton is a fantastic opportu nity for people to celebrate the joy of Shabbat together and to get into the spirit of Judaism with fun, good food, and camaraderie. The Shabbaton is open to non members as well. Sale on Sunday November 23 at 11 AM. There will be artwork in all price ranges starting at under $100. While the children are in Hebrew school stop by Temple Israel, have some brunch and find artwork to beautify your home or the home of someone you care for. All pieces are by Israeli artists and are in a variety of styles. There is sure to be something for everyone so do not miss out on this event. There is an entry fee of $10 for one person or $18 per family but wait ... if you purchase art valued at a total of $100 or more, your entry fee will be deducted from your purchase. What a deal and bagels, too. NEWCOMERS The Torah is being written in the holy city of Jerusalem and will be flown to Charlotte before the ceremony with the last lines left for completion in Charlotte. After the Torah is completed, it will be marched under a chupah in a spe cial procession where it will be greeted by the other Torahs of the synagogue. Adults and children of the congregation will be honored with reading special selected vers es in praise of the Torah. A Hakofot dancing celebration will follow the procession with live music accompanying the dancing. A full delicious festive lunch eon will follow the ceremony. The Torah will make Ohr HaTorah its new home and will be read on spe cial occasions at the synagogue. The Shabbaton will feature a delicious Shabbat dinner with a full wine bar featuring fine kosher wines from around the world. There will be a children’s program as well.
