The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2008 - Page 19 Synagogves^^Congregations December Events at Temple Or Olam December brings a host of Hanukkah happenings at Temple Or Olam. Temple Or Olam and McGill Baptist Church will put on their third annual joint Hanukkah/ Christmas party on December 17 at McGill Baptist Church. The past parties have featured story telling, music, dancing, delicious food, raffles, and, most of all, an opportunity to share traditions and goodwill with our neighbors. For details, please contact Temple Or Olam. On December 21, Temple Or Olam will host a Hanukkah party at McGill Baptist Church at 5 PM. We will light our hanukkiahs, and enjoy wonderful food and entertainment. We’d love for you to join us. Please ^ contact Temple Or Olam for ^ more information. ^ We’ve all heard that familiar song about the dreidel made of clay. All the students of the Temple Or Olam religious school are actually making dreidels out of clay at Mud Slingers Pottery in Concord. Look for these decorative dreidels to be displayed at our Hanukkah party. The religious school students are also participating in a holding our second Shabbat morn ing sing-along service on December 13. We plan to add a Saturday morning service to our monthly schedule, and every cou ple of months we’re holding a Shabbat morning service to help familiarize our congregation with the liturgy of the service, especial ly the joyful songs. O Celebrating Hanukkah at Congregation Or Olam Tzedakah project that we’re call ing “Helping Hands for Light.” Each student has come up with a list of jobs to do for their parents or neighbors. The parent or neigh bor decides how much the job is worth to them and pays the student, who then brings 0) the money into religious school. Our goal is to raise a money to help some needy Cabarrus County residents keep their power on this winter. We’re challenging ourselves to see how many residents we can help for eight days each. Temple Or Olam normally holds Shabbat services on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, but because of the Hanukkah festivi ties, we won’t be holding them in December. We will, however, be , Direct Importer of Diamonds, Pine Jewelry & Watches Estate Jewelry Buy-Sale & Appraise • Custom Design, Repair & Engraving Happy Hanukkah (iuc:c 1 CHMSE-OURER Chabad Sukkah-Mobile Visits Sun City and the Ballantyne Area In an effort to spread the joy of the Sukkot holiday to as many Jewish people in the greater Charlotte area as possible, Chabad of Ballantyne drove a mobile sukkah to some of the outlying communities around town. Rabbi Yisroel Levin brought joy and mitzvot by building a sukkah on the back of an extended pickup truck and providing at least 20 people in Sun City the opportuni ty to partake in this joyous mitz- vah. This sukkah-mobile was a proj ect of Lubavitch of North Carolina and made its rounds to other parts of town as well. The sukkah-mobile concept has been around since the 1960s when young Chabad rabbis would visit college campuses in the northeast with sukkot built on flatbeds.
