Each student in the lower school was asked to choose a mitzvah that was most meaningful to him or her and then to design and illus trate a “sandwich board” to adver tise the mitzvah. The students’ favorite choices included tzedakah (giving charity), hachnasat orchim (entertaining guests), tefillah (prayer), saying Kiddush, finding the afikoman, and visiting the eld erly. On Mitzvah Day, students donned their decorated sandwich boards and joined in a parade through the school as festive Jewish music played in the back ground. Students in grades JK-4 partici pated in the activity, and the mid dle school students performed a special mitzvah by assisting the junior kindergarten and kinder garten students in creating their billboards. This “Kindergarten Connection” program, in which each kindergarten student is paired with a middle school “buddy,” has been such a success at CJDS and has helped to strengthen the sense of family that makes our school so unique. The two groups meet each month to work on a craft project, read sto ries, or enjoy outdoor play together, which helps to bridge the gap between the age groups and makes the younger students feel more at home at our school. ^ m Charlotte Jewish bay ScKool
