The Jewish Film Festival may be over for 2009, but Havurat Tikvah contin ues its ongoing series of Israeli Film Nights on April 11. This month, Community Shabbat services are scheduled for April 18 and are slated to have a particular emphasis on musical expression for Sabbath prayer. Services start at 10 AM at the Fellowship Hall of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 2201 Springdale Ave. (at Magnolia) in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte. After services, stick around for a potluck lunch and the opportunity to meet old friends and make new acquaintances. For more information call the number below. Spring will be in full force when Havurat Tikvah members and friends gather for a weekend (May 8-10) of fun activities, good conversations, and spiritual renewal in the North Carolina mountains. Student Rabbi Arlene Berger will join us for an intergen- erational retreat at Camp Cheerio. Arlene, who is in her second year with Havurat Tikvah, comes to us from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia. In addition to wel coming the Sabbath bride on Friday evening and with morning services on Saturday, they’ll be ample opportunity to participate in various planned activities, relax with friends, or just enjoy the indoor and outdoor facilities of the Camp Cheerio campus. Tzedakah projects at Havurat Tikvah continue with “Project Linus.” Over the past several years, Havurat Tikvah members have come together to knit and assemble “security” blankets for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. In this position, Ms. Tannenbaum will coordinate all activities for chil dren in preparation for their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs, including tutoring. She will also serve as our youth leader to excite and inspire teens and create a great sense of identi fication with the Jewish faith. Youth programs will be targeted for sixth graders and up through high school. She brings over 15 years of experience as a Jewish educa tor, working with Jewish youth in Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist synagogues. She has worked in religious schools, tutored B’nai Mitzvah students, taught Adult Hebrew les sons and worked in Camp Ramah in the Berkshire Mountains. Before moving to Charlotte from Atlanta, Ms. Tanenbaum held a position as Youth Director at Congregation Etz Chaim in Marietta, GA. The youth groups she led won numerous regional and national awards. She plans to institute USY and Kadima youth groups in Fall 2009. Ms. Tanenbaum has also just accepted the position of Executive Assistant to the Executive Director, Sue Worrel, at Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte.
