The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2009 - Page 19 JFS and Oasis Senior Enrichment Program Team Up for Seniors and Caregivers An estimated one in four U.S. households are involved in caring for elderly family members. With the National Jewish Population Survey finding that 19% of American Jews are aged 65 or older an increased number of American Jews are experiencing the emotional and financial chal lenges of care giving. In Mecklenburg County the senior population is expected to grow by more than 1.5 percentage points from 2005-2010. Oasis Senior Enrichment Program and Jewish Family Services are excited about bringing a quarterly series of edu cational workshops and a network of supportive services that offer caregivers easy access to resources and information. The first workshop will be enti tled “Navigating the System” and will explore some of the choices available for senior living includ ing assisted and independent liv ing facilities as well as area home care agencies and the various lev els of services they offer. Since this holiday is often celebrated by eating fruits that are in season at this time in Israel, CJDS middle school students turned the event into a mitzvah project by preparing fruit baskets for distribution to elderly mem bers of our community. Frannie Cohen displays baskets to be pre sented to senior citizens of our community. Making this project a reality left the students in a quandary about the expense of the finiit, since their goal was to fill twenty baskets. Vicky Hirschmann, Program Director for CJDS, con tacted Deborah Cramer of Fresh Market and Scott Gorelick of Foster-Caviness and asked if their two organizations might be able to help with this project. Both agreed, but little did we know the extent of their generosity until the boxes of finiit began arriving at our school: tangerines, apples, grapes, bananas, and oranges—enough finiit to fill 20 large baskets with enough left over to provide a gen erous supply to Jewish Family Services. The middle school students pre pared beautifully wrapped baskets and transported them to some of Charlotte’s lesser well-known nursing and retirement facili ties, including the Dorchester and The Laurels in Pineville. Many of the residents do not have families nearby, and while they were thrilled to receive the baskets, they were also deeply moved by the stu dents’ willingness to spend time visiting with them. We are very grateful to Fresh Market and Foster- Caviness for their benevolence and for allowing us to provide the “gift of giving” to those in our community who are less fortunate. ^ Rachael Hall and Yakira Oudmayer prepare fruit baskets in honor of Tu B ’Shevat.
