Havurat Tikvah members and
friends are looking forward to the
weekend of May 9 for “May
Madness,” an in-town retreat with
Student Rabbi Arlene Berger.
Arlene, who is in her second
year with Havurat Tikvah, comes
to us from the Reconstructionist
Rabbinical College in Philadelphia.
The weekend begins on
Saturday morning at 10 AM with
Community Shabbat services.
Join us at the Fellowship Hall of
St. Andrews Presbyterian Church,
2201 Springdale Ave. (at
Magnolia) in the Dilworth neigh
borhood of Charlotte. After serv
ices, stick around for a potluck
lunch and an afternoon craft activ
ity for the “Butterfly Project.”
Our Saturday evening adult
education program will include a
discussion of menschlichkeit:
what are the origins of the word
mensch? what does it mean to be a
mensch? how do you know if you
are one? WeTl mark the end of
Shabbat with Havdalah and then
continue our evening with a Yom
Ha-atzmaut (Israeli Independence
Day) film, coffee, and
snacks. Call the number
below for times and loca
tion.
The weekend “Madness” con
cludes on Sunday morning (May
10) with bagels and a scavenger
hunt designed for all ages. For
questions about Sunday’s pro
grams or any other retreat activi
ties, contact us through the web
site or at the number below.
Our newest tzedakah project
teams volunteers from Havurat
Tikvah with First Christian
Church, other faith communities,
and the Dilworth neighborhood in
sponsoring a weekly Soup
Kitchen. The Soup Kitchen is
open for lunch each Wednesday at
First Christian Church.
Ongoing mitzvah actvities
include “Project Linus,” which
meets this month on May 17. Join
us to help knit and assemble
“security” blankets for children
who are seriously ill, traumatized,
or otherwise in need; no experi
ence is needed. And on May 31,
Havurat Tikvah’s tzedakah team
