Charlotte Jewish Day School fourth graders put on the third annual “Castle Fair” last month in the school cafeteria. Visitors admired the elaborate and realistic castle dis plays made of cardboard, graham crackers, and everything in between. As part of their study of medieval times and Sid Fleischman’s The Whipping Boy, students were charged with designing and constructing a cas tle complete with drawbridges, towers, moats, crenellations, coats of arms, portcullises, dungeons, and bailey walls. The young knights and fair ladies spent three weeks exploring medieval architecture, health and medicine, economics, housing, government, religion, and food. Students concluded with oral presenta tions describing their “engineer ing” techniques and research find ings.
