Such is the case with the discussion of The Septembers of Shiraz, originally scheduled for this past January, but postponed due to a snowstorm. Set in the aftermath of the Iranian revolution, Sofer’s novel has even more relevance follow ing the Iranian election fiasco. The story follows a prosperous Jewish family, including Isaac, a rare-gem dealer wrongly accused of being a spy, his terrified wife, daughter who is trying to stop the wave of baseless arrests, and son who had been sent to live in an orthodox Jewish community in New York before the rise of the Ayatollahs. The book has earned high praise from reviewers, who have called it “a page turning literary debut, simmering with questions of identity, alienation, and love ... Sofer writes beautifully, whether she’s describing an old man’s ‘wrinkled voice’ or Shirin’s irrita tion at wearing a head scarf.” Without revealing the plot, please note that the ending of The Septembers of Shiraz is more hopeful than our recent selection.
