Dr Ron Carter voices, and in doing so make even the mightiest of walls fall down.” Beth El’s Schloss Summer Lecture will explore the past, pres ent and future of our Jewish/ African American Relations in the South and in Charlotte. How have the African American and Jewish communities walked together and how have we failed one another? From Abraham Joshua Heschel to Harry Golden to Dr. Martin Luther King, what were the voices of pas sion that helped us dream high? What voices do we need to hear today in our own city and where do we need to go? Dr. David Goldfield and Harvey Gantt will share reflections on African- American/Jewish relations in the past and present and Dr. Ron Carter and Rabbi Schindler will share a vision for where these rela tionships could go in the future. Moira Quinn Klein, First Vice President of Temple Beth El and Senior Vice President of Communications and Chief Operating Officer for Charlotte Center City Partners, will moder ate the discussion. Dr. Ronald L. Carter became the 13th president of Johnson C. Smith University last summer. Upon graduating magna cum laude. Phi Beta Kappa, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociol ogy and philosophy from Morehouse College in 1971, Dr. Carter began his distinguished career at Boston University’s Martin Luther King Jr Center, where he rose to become the school’s youngest dean of stu dents. Dr. Carter also held the position of Dean of Students at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and as Provost and Dean of faculty at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina. Harvey Gantt is a well-known and respected Charlotte architect and public servant. In 1963, he was the first African American to be admitted to Clemson University, the last state to hold out to racial integration. From 1974 to 1983, Gantt served on the Charlotte City Council. He was then elected and re-elected as the first and to date only black mayor of Charlotte serving in that posi tion from 1983 to 1987. Mr Gantt remains active in politics, having served on the North Carolina Democratic Party Executive Council, the Democratic National Committee and the National Capital Planning Commission. Dr. David Goldfield is Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Goldfield received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Maryland in 1970. He is an expert on the American South, including race relations, economic development, religion, and political culture. He is author of “America’s Changing Perceptions of Race, 1946-1996,” in Cristina Giorcelli and Rob Kroes, eds.. Living With America, 1946-1996 (VU University Press, Amsterdam, 1997), Race, Region, and Cities: Interpreting the Urban South (1997), Black, White, and Southern: Race Relations and Southern Culture (1990), Urban America: A History (sec. ed. 1990) and of the award-winning study. Still Fighting the Civil War: the American South and Southern History. This annual summer lecture was established four years ago by Marc and Mattye Silverman in memory of Marc’s uncle, Simeon Archibald “Happy” Schloss, Jr. Happy was one of the original founders of Temple Beth El and was a treasurer. He was passionate about Judaism, about Temple life and as his name tells you, he was always Happy. The cost for dinner is $ 10/person.
