Two Cub Scouts with Awards for Jewish Studies
Mazel tov to two hard-working
Cub Scouts from LJCC Pack 163
that recently achieved big honors
by earning awards for Jewish
Studies. Gabriel Novack was pre
sented the Maccabee Emblem by
Rabbi Faith Cantor. The Maccabee
Emblem is a Jewish award given
by the Boy Scouts of America for
Cub Scouts in the third grade or
younger. Gabriel worked with
Rabbi Cantor for several months
in order to fulfill the required stud
ies in Jewish holidays,
Jewish objects, and
Jewish heroes. He
even had the opportuni
ty to interview Rabbi
Murray Ezring, Rabbi
Cantor, and Cantor
Elias Roochvarg. Also
as part of the curricu
lum, Rabbi Cantor
helped Gabriel make
his own tallit and tie his
own tzitzit. Gabriel
loved the process and
says he learned a lot
about Judaism. Now he
is looking forward to
completing the require
ments for the Aleph Emblem and
eventually becoming an Eagle
Scout. Gabriel is a rising third
grader at Providence Day School.
Yossi Berendt received his
Aleph award as a Webelo Scout as
a fifth-grader at the Charlotte
Jewish Day School. Yossi received
help, when needed, from Rabbi
Chanoch Oppenheim of the
Charlotte Torah Center and from
his father Every week his leader,
Morris Rosen, would check the
notebook that Yossi was required
to keep. Mr Rosen commented
that the majority of the questions
that Yossi needed to answer came
