Tricia Hodnev & Scott Menaker Lake Norman Jewish Congregation Caring Committee Answers the Call The Lake Norman Jewish Congregation has established a “Caring Committee” which has matured to provide various func tions within the Temple and in the surrounding community. Meetings are monthly, most are during the day but two are scheduled in the evening to accommodate those who work during the day. During days of joy, illness and death the Caring Committee pro vides a strong support system to the members of the congregation by preparing and delivering meals to those in need and are recuperat ing from an illness or stress. Audree Spatz the Chair for the Caring Committee states “whatev er is needed, the caring committee member is there as a good listener and facilitator Last year with the establish ment of the Levine Dickson Hospice House we were advised of a need for food for visiting fam ilies. We provide various items on a regular basis, for the families to eat while in the waiting room. In addition the caring committee has made Jewish religious items avail able for the patients when needed. Our members volunteer at the facility by sitting with patients and assist the staff in many ways. The Caring committee has completed an extensive research project in order to provide end of life support. A guide of contacts and facilities has been compiled and available for those who have the responsibilities of making arrangements. Lastly, Spatz says “these activi ties are provided by a group of twelve tireless souls who never say no.” For more information visit www.lakenormanjc.org. ^ Chanukah in Cabarrus County with Or Olam As the days grow shorter, the lights of Judaism will continue to bum brightly in Cabarrus County this Chanukah. A fast-growing holiday tradi tion this time of year is Temple Or Olam’s annual Chanukah Party. This year’s festivities, which will be bigger and better than ever, take place December 19 from 3- 5:30 PM at McGill Baptist Church in Concord, NC. We will celebrate the Festival of Lights in the style that only Temple Or Olam can, filling the air with joyous candlelight and celebrating the season with joyous song. Among the many activities we have planned are lots of Chanukah songs and dance in four languages — Hebrew, Ladino, Yiddish and even a little English — Israeli dancing, a skit from our very own Olamniks, lighting candles, and a beautiful havdalah service to cap off all the joy and celebration. We encourage all our members and guests to bring their own menorahs and Chanukah candles. This is a celebration for children and grown-ups of all ages. The event is open to the public. Please RSVP by Dec. 12 to the Temple Or Olam congregational phone at 704-720-7577. Admission for non-members is $18 per individual, $36 per family, which will help defray food and facility rental costs. Members and college students are free. Temple Or Olam will supply the latkes, homemade apple sauce, and sour cream. We look forward to a joyous celebration with our friends and families and reaching out to any one who like to experience the special and mystical joy that comes each Chanukah. Please join us for a truly magic afternoon of song, prayer, food and fellowship. Originally founded and incor porated in 2003 as Congregation Havurat Olam, Temple Or Olam is an independent Jewish congrega tion serving University City and the greater Concord area. The drama which was watched by the world community lasted for several days until the police stormed the building and discovered the massacre. There was one great miracle with the dramatic rescue of their little son, Moshe, by his nanny, who has been declared a heroine from among the nations. On Friday, November 6, a Shabbaton dinner was held at Ohr HaTorah in memory of these right eous souls. 170 people attended the memorial Shabbaton, which was dedicated to the life and achievements of the Holtzbergs. Ohr HaTorah members Ari and Nina Lieberman and Nina’s sister, B’racha, and husband, Abner, from Mumbai have been frequent visitors to the Chabad House in Mumbai and were very friendly with the Holtzbergs. In fact, the night before the terrorist attacks, Ari and Abner participated in the evening services in the Chabad House of Mumbai where Rabbi Holtzberg showed a video, “Living Torah,” which had a sec tion on the Charlotte Jewish com munity. Ari and his family participated in the Ohr HaTorah Shabbaton, and Ari spoke about his special connection with the Holtzbergs. The mood at the Shabbaton was uplifting, as the focus of the evening was the life achievements of this great couple. Participants enjoyed playing a fantastic game called “Mitzvah Puzzle,” which reflected the various mitzvah proj ects enacted by Rabbi Gabi and Rivkie Holtzberg. The Shabbaton, which featured a taste of India, had a collection of delicious Jewish-Indian dishes which were enjoyed by the Shabbaton participants. There are many worldwide memorial events scheduled for the end of November, including the Gavi and Rivkie Holtzberg, z ”l writing of two Torahs, which will represent this wonderful couple. One Torah was written in the United States and the other in Israel with sponsorship by thou sands of people. Chabad is in the process of rebuilding the Chabad House of Mumbai, which will continue to serve the Jewish com munity in India both for locals and visitors. ^ Deadline fer the January issue is December 7.
