The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2009 - Page 20 Sandra & Leon Levine JCC Maccabi Games Award Winners The Sandra & Leon Levine JCC’s Sports and Fitness Department is very pleased to announce the 2009 JCC Maccabi Games award winners, presented this year during the annual Team Charlotte’s reunion party this past October. Matt Baron, Sammy Brown, David Plaus and Reid Worrel are this year’s recipients of the presti gious Harold Josephson Award. This leadership award, established in 1998 at the JCC Maccabi Games hosted in Charlotte and named in memory of an outstand ing leader and gentleman from our Charlotte Jewish community, is presented annually to a member or members of the Charlotte JCC Maccabi Games delegation who demonstrates tremendous forti tude despite adversity and who displays the perseverance to achieve goals that appear unattain able. Previous winners have included: Matt Manes, Mitchell Gartner, Brett Strumwasser, Courtney Rosenberg, Michael Murray, Rebecca Raphael, Alan Platock the boys in-line hockey team from 2005 (Harry Bergmann, Jonathan, Cohen, Matthew Laxer, Matt Lepow, Zach Maniloff and Kyle Schumer), adult coaches/chaperones Larry Brown, Aree Pearlman and Dan Vizzini and Adam Levinson, Alex Widis and Andrew Fishkin. Named in memory of Amy Beth Rosenberg, former Associate Director of the JCC Maccabi Games who very sadly and very suddenly passed away in the spring of 2003 at the age of 36 and who was one of the key continen tal staff insuring the success of the JCC Maccabi Games for many previous years, the award is pre sented annually to a member or members of the Charlotte JCC Maccabi Games delegation who displays “exfra ordinary” behavior while participating at the annual JCC Maccabi Games. The winners of this award for 2009 are Max Wasser and Kyle Worrel. These young men now join previous Rosenberg award winners Elyssa lagnocco, Jeffrey Goldsmith. Matt Gershen, Aaron Zucker, Danya Katz, Sarah Platock, Alex Widis, Amanda Widis, Brooks Corcoran and Sarah Platock. David Plaus, Matt Baron, Coach Larry Brown, and Reid Worrel. Not pictured: Sammy Brown. Matt Baron and David Plaus are jun iors at Providence Day School. Both boys expect to be playing varsity base ball this coming spring. Matt is the son of Gail and John Baron, David is the son of Jenny and Don Plaus. Sammy Brown is a junior at Country Day School. He currently plays for an On Deck 17U travelling team and expects to be playing varsity baseball in the spring. He is the son of Tracy and Larry Brown. Reid Worrel is a senior at South Mecklenburg High School. He has played baseball for South Meek HS for four years and is the son of Sue and Kim Worrel. All of these award winners are also four year JCC Maccabi Games participants (2006-2009). Max Wasser is a junior at Myers Park High School where he has played junior varsity baseball and antici pates playing varsity ball in the spring. Max is also a four- year JCC Maccabi Games participant (2006-2009). He is the son of Linda and Steve Wasser. Kyle is a two year JCC Maccabi Games participant (2008- 2009) and is the son of Sue and Kim Worrel. Congratulations to Matt, Sammy, David, Reid, Max and Kyle for their accomplishments in earning these very well deserved honors. All of these young men, with the exception of Kyle, are aging out of the JCC Maccabi Games experience and their col lective enthusiasm, leadership and commitment to the JCC Maccabi Games program was very much appreciated and will not be easy to replace. More than 45 women, includ ing many Young Leaders, were in atten dance at the beautiful home of Dana Ditesheim. A wonderful assort ment of desserts and drinks were served while members mixed and mingled with both prospective and new members. Everyone gathered in the spacious living room, where Amy Montoni presented an overview of the Hadassah projects and Hadassah’s mission statement, with particular emphasis on the Hadassah Medical Organization. CAS SAH Amy also introduced the evening’s speaker. Dr Racelle Weiman. All ears were turned toward Dr Weiman as she enlightened us with stories of the lives of Jewish Israeli women who have made a dif ference in Israel with their thoughts and actions.
