The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2009 - Page 7 “Hanukkah Hoopla” with Havurat Tikvah Havurat Tikvah’s annual “Hanukkah Hoopla” is scheduled this year for Saturday, December 12. We’ll start at 7 PM with Havdalah and then continue the festivities with a multiple-meno- rah lighting. Bring your menorah and plan to join us for games, songs, and - what else? - latkes. As always, the highlight of the evening will be the presentation of Dreidel Champions at Havurat Tikvah’s 2008 Hanukkah Hoopla. the “Best-of-the-Best Latke Awards.” This year’s evening of fun takes place at our Dilworth home, in the Fellowship Hall of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church (2202 Springdale Avenue at Magnolia). This month’s mitzvah and tzedakah projects continue with participation in the twice-weekly soup kitchen at First Christian Church in Dilworth; the soup kitchen provides a “restaurant” atmosphere along with a family- style welcome to those in need of a good, nourishing meal. “Project Linus,” brings together Havurat Tikvah members and friends to create “security” blan kets for children who are seri ously ill, traumatized, or other wise in need; no experi ence -just willingness - is necessary. And if you’re a film buff, look for our Saturday evening “Israeli Film Series.” Back by popular demand, the series began last month with a showing of the award winning movie Jellyfish. At Beth El, we have programs for all. Join us as a congregational family to welcome Chanukah on Friday night, December 11 with a Chanukah dinner at 6 PM ($8/adult and $6/child, RSVP required) followed by our memo rable “Night of 100 Lights” Family Chanukah Service at 7 PM. If you want to share your love of our holiday by celebrating in the broader community, join us for a Chanukah book reading at Barnes and Noble at the Arboretum at 2 PM on Sunday, December 6 as we share Chanukah stories, eat jelly donuts and celebrate the holiday with our own kids and those in the outside community who are interested in learning about our culture. Consider also joining us on Sunday, December 13 at 6 PM as we bring coins to fill a menorah at South Park, share our tzedakah with those in need and light our festival lights that will brighten not only the South Park Mall but our Jewish community. If you have a young one, our Tot Shabbat committee is provid ing extra special Tot Chanukah Fun on Friday, December 18 at 5:15 PM in Luski Hall of our Bernstein Education Building. Children ages five and under should plan on bringing their fam ilies, siblings, and their favorite menorah as they join the Tot Shabbat crowd for Chanukah with singing, dancing and fun. If you are an energetic member of our youth, you’ll love our LIB ERTY Senior Youth Group Toga Chanukah Party on December 11 from 6-10 PM. First we’ll join the congregation for festival services in our service style clothing, and afterwards toga will be the style as we will party and have prizes for the best toga, best homemade latkes and most creative latke recipe. For our younger youth, all 3rd-6th graders will come together for a Shabbat late afternoon KATANTY Chanukah Party on Saturday, December 12, from 5-7 PM (cost $10, RSVP required). For information on either of these youth programs contact Sara Bryan at sbryan@beth-el.com. If you are in your 20s and 30s, the Third Annual Vodka/Latke Party sponsored by NextDor is a must. On Saturday, December 12, we’ll celebrate with style, with friends, food and with drink as your bring either your favorite latkes or favorite vodka. Finally, if you are 50 and above, you will surely want to spend Monday of Chanukah with us for a S.P.I.C.E. Latke Lunch ($7/per- son) in Luski Hall. The program will begin at 11AM with a session with Rabbi Schindler entitled “Kids at Heart Storytelling” fol lowed by our festival luncheon and Dr. Marvin Witte leading us with Chanukah music on his accordion.
