Temple Israel Book Club Identical Strangers: A Memoir of Twins Separated and Reunited by Elyse Schein and Paula Bernstein Thursday, April 15, 7:30 PM, Temple Israel Identical Strangers is indeed an appropriate name to describe twin sisters who were split up as infants and found each other as thirty-five year old adults. The book’s authors, Elyse Schein and Paula Bernstein, will be the featured speakers at the Twelfth Annual Women’s Spring Lecture on April 22. The Temple Israel Book Club will discuss this poignant and powerful memoir at its April 15 meeting. In addition to their personal story, the book sheds light on past adoption practices for twins. The sisters, along with a number of other sets of separated twins, were part of a secret scientific study of identical siblings. Critics describe Identical Strangers as “an intelligent explo ration of how identity intersects with bloodlines. A must read for anyone interested in what it means to be a family. As you accompany the twins on their search for the truth of their birth, you witness another kind of birth - the germi nation and flowering of sisterly love.” The presentation by these mem- oir-writing sisters at the Women’s Division Spring Lecture will be fascinating. Questions for these speakers are sure to be generated by reading and discussing their story at Temple Israel’s April 15 meeting. Identical Strangers is available at the public library and the Levine-Sklut Judaic Library and for purchase at local book stores or on-line for about $15. Get a copy, attend the April 15 meeting, and bring it with you to be signed on April 22 at the 12th Annual Spring Lecture. There’ll be a place for you at the TI Book Club table. Please see page 1 for more infor mation on the Spring Lecture.
