The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2010 - Page 19 Yom HaShoah, and Other News from Temple Israel The Charlotte Jewish commu nity’s annual commemoration of Yom HaShoah will be Sunday evening, April 11, beginning at 7 PM in Lemer Hall at the Levine Jewish Community Center The commemoration will begin with a candle lighting ceremony of six candles, one for each of the six million of our brothers and sisters who perished under the evil and violent hand of Nazi Europe. The service will include readings and prayers, concluding with the kad- dish yatom, the mourners kaddish in memory of the six million. The candle lighting ceremony will be followed by a brief presentation about The Butterfly Project. The Butterfly Project has created hun dreds and hundreds of butterflies artistically decorated by members of the Charlotte community to commemorate the loss of over a million children under Nazi tyran ny. At next year’s Yom HaShoah commemoration, we hope to dedi cate the butterfly memorial. The remainder of the program is enti tled “The Element of Human Choice,” a presentation on Jewish and human morality by Asaf Shenhav, this year’s Shaliach from Israel. The program will focus on the choice a person has on whether to be active or to be a by-stander. Being a by-stander is a problem we deal with on a daily basis. The holocaust is an extreme, unfortu nate example of how millions stood by. One question is, “How do we commemorate those who perished?” By making a living YOM E9 h' 14 [} A ]{ la^mi iiM I’^i’hiiBiiiTiiWi memorial, and committing our selves to a non- passive life. The program will be an engaging inter active program for both young and old. Sources from modem Hebrew songs to television shows, the bible, the good Samaritan law, the Shoah “holocaust” and daily life will be presented. This is a pro gram that Mr Shenhav has had tremendous success with for teacher training situations in schools, and other programmatic settings here and in Israel.
