The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2010 - Page 19 Remembering Those Who Have Gone Before Memorializing a Loved One with a Donation to a Favored Fund By Phil Warshauer, Executive Director, Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community How often do we wait to honor or thank a mentor, friend or loved one only to have them pass away before the message can be deliv ered in a meaningful and long- lasting way? It was not long after reading an article in April’s Charlotte Jewish News about Bea Gibbs’ death, her legacy to Jewish Family Services and her dedication to Jewish sen iors in our community that I received word that Jack Jensen had passed away. While many of you knew Bea, you probably never had the privilege of know ing Jack. Bea was driven by her passion as an advocate for older adults throughout our community. Jack’s commitment was as a teacher, mentor and coach to col lege students. He served Guilford College for over 45 years winning one National Championship in basketball and another three in golf. If they awarded national championship rings for volunteer work, then Bea would have had a few of her own. I didn’t know Bea very well. Although I had only met her on a couple of occasions I knew of her work at Jewish Family Services and of the inspiration she provided to people of all ages. It was diffi cult to be associated with the Charlotte Jewish community and not know of Bea Gibbs. Jack and I became friends dur ing my brief time at Guilford College as Planned Giving Director If you attended Guilford College over the past five decades you knew Jack Jensen. The bas ketball court was named after him, the same year he was inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted into the National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame, sharing the billing with fel low Wake Forest alumnus Arnold Palmer Bea and Jack were both role models and mentors, impacting those they met with their passion, kindness and concern. Both were driven to succeed, more focused on accomplishing the task at hand than on any accolades that may have come their way. I know Jack was often embarrassed by the attention, often shifting the con versation to leam more about you and your family. Bea was wired the same way. A memorial service was held on February 21 to remember Bea Gibbs with more than 300 people in attendance. A month later I attended a similar ceremony to remember Jack. At the bottom of the memorial service program and on the last line of Jack’s obituary, readers were informed that gifts to memo rialize Jack could be sent to Guilford College’s Jack Jensen Golf Endowment Fund. This fund was established four years earlier when Jack shared with me his concerns about the funding of Guilford’s golf program when he was gone. I shared this concern with three of Jack’s biggest sup porters and the fund was estab lished. As we prepared for his funeral, the four of us reflected on the day that we surprised Jack with the Fund, leaving a man known for lengthy conversations speechless. Each of us were pleased that we were able to share this moment with our friend dur ing his lifetime. How often do we miss the opportunity to say thank you and honor those closest to us? It is never too late to link someone’s lifetime accomplishments and name with meaningful programs or organizations. For example, Jewish Family Services has announced the establishment of the Bea Gibbs Fund for Seniors providing senior programming and services.
